Job Description

This role requires an experienced First Class Pipefitter with a strong background in marine, commercial nuclear, or petrochemical environments. You will interpret complex piping drawings and perform precise pipe fitting, fabrication, and installation work on a variety of materials to support shipyard and vessel operations.

Responsibilities

  • Read and interpret ship piping drawings to plan and execute pipefitting tasks accurately.
  • Fit and install carbon steel, corrosion-resistant steel (CRES), and copper nickel piping systems to required specifications.
  • Perform end preparation of piping by hand and with appropriate machinery, such as specialized pipe preparation equipment.
  • Install and adjust pipe hangers to ensure proper support, alignment, and system integrity.
  • Use a ruler accurately in inches and tenths to measure, mark, and verify dimensions.
  • Prepare and fit backing rings to support welding and ensure proper joint configuration.
  • Clean cut and break pipe using a grinder while maintaining safety and quality standards.
  • Hand-prep V bevels on pipe ends to meet welding and fabrication requirements.
  • Fabricate various details and assemblies directly from drawings, ensuring adherence to specifications.
  • Bend pipe from templates and operate a hand bender to achieve precise angles and shapes.
  • Fit welded sockets accurately to ensure tight, secure, and properly aligned joints.
  • Fit brazed joints with or without inserts, following applicable procedures and quality requirements.
  • Work on Navy vessels and in shop environments, adapting to shipboard conditions and confined spaces as required.
  • Collaborate with other trades and follow shipyard procedures, safety rules, and quality standards throughout all tasks.
Essential Skills
  • Five (5) or more years of experience as a marine, commercial nuclear, or petrochemical First Class Pipefitter.
  • Ability to read and interpret ship piping drawings and blueprints.
  • Proficiency in fitting carbon steel, CRES, and copper nickel piping.
  • Ability to perform pipe end preparation by hand and with specialized pipe preparation machines.
  • Knowledge of installing and adjusting pipe hangers.
  • Ability to accurately read a ruler using inches and tenths.
  • Skill in prepping and fitting backing rings for welded joints.
  • Ability to clean cut and break pipe using a grinder.
  • Ability to hand prep V bevels on pipe ends.
  • Experience fabricating details and assemblies from drawings.
  • Ability to bend pipe from templates and operate a hand bender.
  • Ability to fit welded sockets and brazed joints with or without inserts.
  • U.S. citizenship.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
  • Three (3) or more years of experience as a marine, commercial nuclear, or petrochemical First Class Pipefitter may be considered based on overall skill level.
  • Prior experience working in a shipyard environment.
  • Familiarity with Navy vessel systems and shipboard conditions.
  • Comfort working from detailed blueprints and technical drawings.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to safety and quality.

Work Environment

The position is based in a large shipyard that extends over several miles in Southeast Virginia. Work takes place on Navy vessels and in shop environments, often in industrial and shipboard settings. Seasonal conditions include hot, humid summers and cool winters, and you will work both indoors and outdoors as required by the project. The operation runs three shifts—1st shift (7:00 a.m.–3:30 p.m.), 2nd shift (3:30 p.m.–11:00 p.m.), and 3rd shift (11:00 p.m.–7:00 a.m.)—and you must be able to work any shift as assigned, with shift availability subject to operational needs. The environment is industrial and safety-focused, with standard shipyard safety procedures, tools, and equipment used for pipefitting and fabrication work.

This is a Contract position based out of Baton Rouge, LA.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $29.50 - $29.50/hr.
