Responsible and accountable for accurately abstracting the clinical and demographic data from patient records and coding this data for injury severity and procedures completed. The trauma registrar reviews patient records in a responsible and ethical manner in order to accurately abstract and enter data into the trauma registry. The Registrar also provides statistical reports from the trauma registry as requested.  The Trauma Registrar displays the ability to work independently and collaboratively with the team.

Required Qualifications: 

  • Coursework/Training: Successful completion of Anatomy and Physiology coursework at an accredited college or university OR
  • Coursework/Training: CSTR/CAISS Certification
  • Coursework/Training: Successful completion of a medical terminology course OR
  • Coursework/Training: CSTR/CAISS Certification    
  • AAAM's Abbreviated Injury Scale (AIS) course & pass within 1 year of hire
  • Participate in a Trauma Registry Course within 1 year of hire
  • Take an ICD-10 course or refresher every five years if previously taken and pass within 1 year of hire
  • 3 years of current work experience in an acute-care hospital with exposure to medical terminology and patient medical records.
  • 1 year - Must have minimum one year experience coding ICD-10-CM specific to injuries and mechanism of injuries in an Acute Care Hospital.
  • 1 year - Must have minimum one year of experience coding ICD-10-PCS in an Acute Care Hospital.
  • 1 year of experience with EPIC Health Record System in an Acute Care Hospital setting.
  • 3 years of related professional experience including extensive use of data entry and word processing systems including Word and Excel.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Coursework/Training: Participate and pass the most recent version of the AAAM's Abbreviated Injury Scale (AIS) course
  • Coursework/Training: Participate in a trauma registry course that includes all of the following content:  Abstraction; Data Management; Reports/Report Analysis; Data Validation; HIPAA.
  • Coursework/Training: ICD-10 Trauma Course Completion
  • Certification as a Certified Trauma Registrar and/or CAISS within 2 years of hire
  • 9 months of experience performing duties as a Trauma Registrar in an acute care hospital.
  • Work experience involving data analysis and presentation, or comparable education.
  • Experience using a Trauma Registry Software such as DI-V5.
  • Experience with trauma site survey preparation, trauma center structure, and the trauma performance improvement process.
  • Participate in an ICD-10 course, or an ICD-10 refresher course every five years.
