The Transportation Worker 1 Equipment Operator (TW1EQOP) undergeneral supervision, performs entry level functions working in theconstruction and maintenance of highways. Duties include driving a lighttruck or vehicle during regular operation as well as during snow removaland ice control (SRIC). Operating various equipment such as a fork truck,end loader, skid steer, rollers, utility tractor, brush chipper, as well asvarious hand tools. May be responsible for transporting materials or fuel toequipment and providing traffic control by flagging on job sites. Selectedapplicants may be exposed to hazardous working conditions and inclementweather. Performs other related duties as required. Statewide weeklyOVERNIGHT travel is required. Performs other project related work asrequired. This position WILL NOT report to Operations Division CharlestonHeadquarters. It is a STATEWIDE position and will require weeklystatewide travel.

  • The selected applicant will be placed in a U.S. Department of Labor apprenticeship program. The selected applicant will be required, within 6 months of employment, to obtain a commercial driver's license (CDL). Progress through the apprenticeship program, as well as the opportunity for advancement to a higher classification, is dependent upon hours completed, proficiency in work, training completed, as well as obtaining and maintaining a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL).
  • The WVDOT is responsible for the planning, construction, maintenance, and regulation of over 35,000 miles of state roads. This duty may necessitate employees working irregular hours, shifts, weekends, and more than 40 hours per week, occasionally without prior notice.
  • In the area of assignment of Equipment Operator, a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) will be required within six (6) months of employment.
  • Pay Grade 10H
    Tier 1 hourly rate: $15.4913

Transportation Worker 1 - Equipment Operator

  • Operate a light truck or vehicle.
  • Operate a forklift truck to load and unload trucks.
  • May operate Endloader, Skid Steer, Rollers, Utility Tractor, and Brush Chipper.
  • Control brush and vegetation using hand tools and other equipment.
  • Plow snow using a light truck.
  • Perform minor maintenance on the fleet of equipment and vehicles.
  • Transport fuel to the equipment.
  • Answer telephone and radio calls during snow removal and ice control.
  • Flags traffic at construction sites.
  • Travel may be required; therefore, a valid driver’s license is required.
  • A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) will be required within six (6) months of employment.


• Knowledge of general safety procedures.
• Knowledge of methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in the maintenance and repair of vehicles and other motor-driven equipment.
• Knowledge of the operation of motor-driven equipment.
• Skill in the use of tools and equipment used in the repair of motor-driven equipment. Ability to diagnose minor mechanical problems and determine appropriate procedures for repair.
• Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
• Ability to learn from example and work cooperatively with others.
• Ability to maintain routine records (timecards, repair work orders).


REQUIRED TRAINING/EDUCATION
• No formal education required.


REQUIRED EXPERIENCE
• This is the entry-level classification in this series. No prior experience is required.
