JOB SUMMARY

The Transportation Manager is responsible for the front-line execution of Martin Marietta’s logistics and distribution strategy. This role ensures the safe, efficient, and cost-effective movement of materials from production facilities to customer job sites. A primary focus is maintaining a high-performance fleet while upholding the company’s Guardian Angel safety culture. The Manager oversees daily dispatch operations, manages third-party carrier relationships, and ensures full compliance with DOT and FMCSA regulations.

KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Direct the daily scheduling and routing of the fleet to maximize equipment utilization and meet customer delivery windows.
  • Monitor payload efficiency and prevent overloading to protect equipment and ensure legal compliance.
  • Manage and evaluate third-party (hired) haulers, negotiating rates and ensuring they adhere to Martin Marietta’s service and safety standards.
  • Collaborate with Plant Managers and Sales teams to level outbound shipments and manage inventory flow at transloading or distribution sites.
  • Ensure 100% compliance with Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) and Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations, including Electronic Logging Device (ELD) monitoring and Hours of Service (HOS).
  • Lead daily 'THINK' or 'TRACK' safety meetings. Conduct regular field safety audits and vehicle inspections to ensure roadworthiness.
  • Investigate all transportation-related incidents or 'near-misses,' performing root-cause analysis and implementing corrective actions.
  • Manage the transportation department’s Pandamp;L, focusing on reducing 'cost-per-ton' and managing fuel, maintenance, and labor expenses.
  • Coordinate with shop mechanics for preventative maintenance (PM) schedules to minimize downtime and extend the life of the fleet.
  • Analyze Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) such as cycle times, turnaround times, and freight spend to identify areas for process improvement.
  • Oversee DOT files (CDL and medical card expiration) for internal drivers.
  • Work within the team to streamline processes with regards to equipment transporting, truck type selection, T/HR targets, number of trucks selected for each project, haul routes, and communication between departments.
  • Onboard and train a diverse team of drivers and dispatchers.
  • Conduct regular performance reviews, providing coaching and discipline when necessary to maintain high operational standards.
  • Act as the primary point of escalation for delivery issues, resolving customer complaints regarding timing, site access, or driver conduct.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education

Bachelor’s degree in Supply Chain Management, Logistics, Business preferred or relevant experience in lieu of a degree.

Work Experience

7+ years of experience in Logistics or Transportation Management, preferably within the Asphalt industry; 3+ years of experience in a leadership role is preferred.

Physical Requirements

Must be able to lift and carry up to 50 lbs. for plant maintenance and equipment servicing.

Required to bend, stoop, climb, and reach. You must be able to maintain three points of contact when climbing on/off machinery or on ladders.

Strong hand-eye-foot coordination is essential for operating hand/foot controls. You must have good depth perception with or without seeing aid for distances up to 150 feet.

Working Conditions

All duties require outside assignments and require periods of work in all weather conditions, cold, wet, dry and dusty. Must be able to work in areas where noise levels are up to 85 dbs.

The hiring range for this position is $80,000 -$110,000 exclusive of benefits or bonuses (discretionary and non-discretionary). The offered base compensation will be determined based on factors such as geographic location, business need, market conditions, proficiencies, skills, education, and experience. Additionally, at Martin Marietta we place a high value on internal pay equity and will consider the compensation for those in similarly situated roles and direct team members.
