Traffic Signal Technician Trainee (Trainee Under Fill A)

Location: 22211 US HWY 19 N, BLDG #1, Clearwater, FL 33765

Schedule: Monday - Thursday, 6:30 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. or Tuesday - Friday, 6:30 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.

Under close supervision, the Traffic Signal Technician Trainee performs basic support work in the installation, maintenance, and repair of traffic signal systems and related equipment. This position is intended as a training role focused on learning fundamental skills, safe work practices, and departmental procedures while assisting higher-level technicians.

What Would You Do?

  • Assists technicians with installation, maintenance, and repair of traffic signals and flashers.

  • Performs basic tasks such as tool handling, material staging, and site cleanup.

  • Learns proper work zone setup in accordance with MUTCD standards.

  • Assists with routine inspections and simple maintenance activities.

  • Observes and learns troubleshooting techniques for signal operations.

  • Assists with maintaining stock levels on trucks and organizing materials.

  • Performs basic vehicle and equipment checks.

  • Learns to document work activities, service calls, and work orders.

  • Reports hazards, unsafe conditions, and issues to supervisor or lead technician.

  • May assist with traffic control for special events.

  • May assist Signs and Markings division as needed.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

What Do You Need to Have?

Education and Experience:

  • A High School Diploma or General Equivalency Diploma (GED) is required.

  • One (1) year of construction or outdoor field work experience.

  • Related coursework or technical training in electrical or electronics is highly desirable but not required.

Special Qualifications:

  • Possession and maintenance of a valid State of Florida Driver's License upon hire.

  • Possession and maintenance of a valid State of Florida Commercial Driver’s License “B” within one (1) year of hire.

  • Assignment to work a variety of work schedules including compulsory work periods in special, emergency, and/or disaster situations.

  • Other knowledge, skills, abilities, and credentials as required for the position.

Highly Desirable

  • Electrical Knowledge: Coursework or technical training in electrical/electronics; basic understanding of AC/DC systems

  • Technical Skills: Reading wiring diagrams or construction plans; using diagnostic tools (e.g., multimeters)

  • Industry Experience: Traffic signals, roadway lighting, ITS devices; signal cabinets and detection systems

  • Field Work: Outdoor/roadside work experience; operating bucket trucks, lift equipment, or construction tools

  • Certifications: OSHA, MOT/TTC, or similar safety certifications

  • Computer Skills: Basic proficiency for data entry and equipment configuration

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Basic mechanical aptitude and willingness to learn.

  • Willingness to learn electrical and traffic signal systems.

  • Ability to follow instructions and safety procedures.

  • Basic knowledge of hand and power tools.

  • Ability to keep accurate records, prepare and submit clear and accurate reports.

  • Must be able to maintain an effective and professional working relationship with employees, contractors, and the general public.

  • Ability to withstand exposure to varying weather conditions and work in confined spaces and at considerable heights, and possession of sufficient physical strength and agility to lift and carry heavy objects and stand and walk for long periods.

  • Ability to use small office equipment, computers, and highly technical computer applications.
