Trading and Transmission Intern

Guzman Energy | Denver, CO | Paid Internship, In-Person

About Guzman Energy

Guzman Energy is a Denver-based wholesale power provider dedicated to revolutionizing the energy landscape through innovative solutions and sustainable practices. Serving cooperatives, municipalities, companies, & tribes across North America, we combine entrepreneurial spirit with deep industry expertise to create value in complex energy markets. Our team of approximately 80 professionals is committed to accelerating the transition to clean energy while maintaining competitive pricing and reliable service for our customers.

Position Overview

Guzman Energy is undergoing a significant market shift with the expansion of the RTOE (Real-Time Organized Energy) market. This internship offers a hands-on opportunity to sit at the center of that transition.

The intern will conduct a structured comparison of historical e-tag data and transmission purchases sourced via OASIS against current post-expansion cleared data — building a rigorous, quantitative picture of how transmission costs and power flows have changed from the "old world" to the "new world." Analysis will span e-tag reconciliation, virtual transactions, BSS, and FTRs, and the resulting work will directly inform how the broader organization understands and adapts to the new market structure.

This is an analytical, research-intensive role with real deliverables that will be presented to the trading team.

Internship Duration: 8–12 weeks during Summer 2026 (May–August, depending on academic calendar)

Key Responsibilities

Transmission & Market Analysis

  • Compare pre- and post-RTOE expansion transmission data, including historical e-tag records and OASIS transmission purchases, to quantify shifts in the cost to flow power across the network
  • Aggregate and analyze data on convergence bids, Financial Transmission Rights (FTRs), and index futures in support of congestion and broader trading strategies
  • Support e-tag reconciliation workflows and assist with BSS and virtual transaction analysis

Research & Documentation

  • Conduct research and prepare written reports on tariffs, evolving market structures, and settlement procedures relevant to the RTOE expansion
  • Document methodology, assumptions, and findings clearly for a non-technical audience

Trading Desk Support

  • Learn and perform foundational administrative tasks including deal entry and trade documentation
  • Refine existing tools and data pipelines to improve team workflows and enable data-driven decision-making across the trading desk

Deliverables

  • Consolidated Analysis Report: A detailed written analysis comparing transmission costs and flows pre- and post-RTOE expansion, covering e-tags, OASIS purchases, virtuals, BSS, and FTRs
  • Summary Presentation: A clear, audience-ready presentation communicating key findings and implications to the broader trading organization

Required Qualifications

  • Currently pursuing a degree in Economics, Finance, Engineering, Mathematics, Statistics, or a related quantitative field
  • Strong analytical skills and comfort working with large datasets
  • Proficiency in Excel; experience with Python, SQL, or similar tools is a plus
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

Preferred Qualifications

  • Familiarity with wholesale power markets, OASIS, or FERC-regulated transmission concepts
  • Prior coursework or experience in energy, commodities, or financial markets
  • Ability to work independently, manage competing priorities, and meet deadlines in a fast-paced trading environment

What the Guz Offers

  • Hourly compensation: $21.00–$25.00 per hour (non-exempt)
  • Direct exposure to wholesale power trading and Western U.S. energy markets during a period of significant market evolution
  • Mentorship from an experienced congestion trader
  • Experience translating complex market data into actionable business insights
  • A concrete, portfolio-ready project with measurable outcomes
