Job Title: TPL - Instrument Technician 3
Job Description
This position supports an Engine Software and Systems Development organization by providing hands-on laboratory and field test support for cutting-edge engine and electronics technology. The Instrument Technician 3 builds, maintains, and troubleshoots lab and field test setups, ensuring that development and validation engineers have reliable equipment, wiring, and instrumentation to carry out their work efficiently.
Responsibilities
- Support development and validation engineers in the engine software and systems teams by providing timely and accurate laboratory and field test assistance.
- Build, troubleshoot, repair, and maintain lab test benches used for engine and electronics development and validation.
- Build, troubleshoot, repair, and maintain field test setups to support engine and electronics testing outside the lab.
- Create and repair wiring harnesses to connect test equipment, sensors, and control systems according to specifications and schematics.
- Create and repair load boxes to simulate electrical loads and support test activities.
- Perform harness and load box creation as a regular part of day-to-day work.
- Troubleshoot and repair electrical systems, including identifying faults, replacing components, and verifying proper operation.
- Measure, cut, crimp, and solder wires with precision to meet design requirements and quality standards.
- Read and follow electrical prints and schematics to build, modify, and repair test equipment and wiring.
- Maintain accurate calibrated equipment logs to ensure traceability and compliance with calibration requirements.
- Ensure lab and test equipment are properly maintained, functional, and available when needed by engineers.
- Document work, tasks, and resolutions in issue or ticketing systems to keep project stakeholders informed.
- Respond to planned task work assigned through issue lists and complete tasks according to priority and schedule.
- Respond to walk-up requests from engineers during the day, providing flexible support to urgent or emerging needs.
- Collaborate closely with engineers to understand project scope, test plans, and priorities, and align technician work accordingly.
- Support multiple electronics labs, office bench areas, and technician workshop spaces, moving between locations as needed.
- Order parts and materials using computer systems to ensure test benches and setups remain fully equipped.
- Perform basic mechanical tasks such as cutting and drilling metal to mount components and assemble test fixtures.
- Use hand tools, multimeters, and other instrumentation to build, verify, and troubleshoot test setups.
- Contribute to a safe and organized lab and workshop environment, following all required safety practices and using PPE as required.
Essential Skills
- At least 5+ years of technician, electronics, or repair experience, or completion of an electrician or mechanic-type apprenticeship with 5+ years of experience.
- Hands-on electrical work experience, including harness building, measuring and cutting wires, crimping pins and sockets, and soldering circuits.
- Ability to read and follow electrical prints, blueprints, and schematics accurately.
- Strong troubleshooting skills for electrical systems, including the ability to diagnose and repair issues in wiring, harnesses, and test setups.
- Proficiency in wire measuring, cutting, crimping, and soldering using appropriate tools and techniques.
- Computer skills sufficient to document work in issue or ticketing systems, view prints and schematics, and order parts.
- Mechanical aptitude, including the ability to cut and drill metal for mounting and assembly tasks.
- Self-motivation and the ability to manage assigned priorities independently with minimal supervision.
- Effective collaboration skills to work closely with a large team of development and validation engineers.
- Relevant internship or project experience in electronics, instrumentation, or repair, where applicable.
- Knowledge in a comparable trade such as electrician, mechanical technician, or mechanic.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Experience soldering integrated circuit boards and performing fine-pitch or detailed electronic repairs.
- Familiarity with oscilloscopes, multimeters, and other electronic test and measurement instruments.
- Experience with calibration processes and maintaining calibration records for test equipment.
- Knowledge of instrumentation and wiring practices used in engine, electronics, or industrial test environments.
- Comfort using a variety of hand tools for electrical and mechanical assembly work.
- Ability to interpret and work from detailed wiring diagrams and harness drawings.
- Experience working with harnesses, crimping tools, and wire cutting tools in a lab or workshop setting.
- Exposure to issue or ticketing systems for logging, tracking, and prioritizing work requests.
- Relevant vocational training, technical coursework, or industry certifications in electronics, instrumentation, or a related field.
- Internship experience that includes hands-on electronics, instrumentation, or repair project work.
Work Environment
The role is based in a technician workshop and multiple electronics lab environments that support engine software and systems development. You will work around lab test benches, office bench areas, and technician workshop spaces, frequently moving between labs and office areas to support various test setups. The environment is hands-on and tool-intensive, involving regular use of hand tools, wiring tools, multimeters, oscilloscopes, and other electronic test equipment. Work follows a structured issues list and ticketing system, but also includes responding to ad hoc walk-up requests from engineers throughout the day. You will collaborate closely with a large team of development and validation engineers, typically around one hundred team members, in a professional and technical setting. Personal protective equipment (PPE) is required in appropriate areas, and you are expected to follow established safety practices and procedures while working in the labs and workshop.

Pay and BenefitsThe pay range for this position is $22.00 - $28.00/hr.
