Overview:

We are seeking a hands-on Tool Designer who excels at bridging engineering design with real-world manufacturing. This role is ideal for someone who enjoys seeing designs evolve from concept to finished tools and thrives in a collaborative shop-floor environment.


Key Responsibilities

1. Technical Design Excellence

  • Develop accurate 3D models using CAD tools (Creo/Solid Modeling)
  • Create complete 2D drawing packages ready for manufacturing
  • Apply knowledge of materials and manufacturing processes in all designs

2. Manufacturing-Focused Design

  • Design tools with machining, fabrication, assembly, and adjustability in mind
  • Apply appropriate tolerances without over-engineering
  • Consider cost, lead time, and shop capabilities during the design phase

3. Attention to Detail

  • Produce clear, precise, and easy-to-understand drawings
  • Follow company drafting standards and documentation practices
  • Maintain proper revision control and communicate design changes effectively

4. Collaboration & Communication

  • Clearly communicate design intent through drawings and discussions
  • Collaborate with machinists, welders, inspectors, and cross-functional teams
  • Incorporate shop-floor feedback into design improvements

5. Problem Solving & Adaptability

  • Take a practical, solution-oriented approach to design challenges
  • Adapt to changing requirements and constraints
  • Balance simplicity with performance and functional requirements

6. Ownership & Accountability

  • Manage designs from concept through build and tryout
  • Follow through on corrections, issues, and improvements
  • Apply lessons learned to continuously improve future designs


Required Qualifications

  • Experience with Creo or other Solid Modeling CAD tools
  • Strong knowledge of fabrication and manufacturing processes
  • Engineering background (Mechanical or related field preferred)


Preferred Skills

  • Experience working closely with shop-floor teams
  • Understanding of machining, welding, and assembly processes
  • Strong problem-solving and communication skills
  • Familiarity with tolerance stack-ups and GD&T (a plus)
