Position Summary:

The Temporary Instructional Specialist supports the Tabor Lab’s NSF summer program through the development of synthetic biology educational materials for high school classroom use. This position works collaboratively with lab researchers to translate scientific concepts into accessible, classroom-appropriate curriculum content and learning activities. The role supports the planning and implementation of a time-limited summer initiative and contributes to the program’s educational goals through content development, coordination, and related program support.

Ideal Candidate Statement:

The ideal candidate brings experience in education, curriculum design, or classroom instruction, along with the ability to translate technical or scientific material into engaging learning content for high school students. They will be comfortable working collaboratively with researchers, organized in managing project-based work on a summer timeline, and able to develop clear, age-appropriate instructional materials that support program goals.

Workplace Requirements:

This position is exclusively on-site, necessitating all duties to be performed in-person at Rice University from June 8 – July 31, 2026. Per Rice policy 440, work arrangements may be subject to change.

Hiring Range: $4,500 per month, prorated based on the appointment dates.

*Exempt (salaried) positions under FLSA are not eligible for overtime. 

This position is funded by a grant, soft and/or restricted funds.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree 

  • 1 + years experience in teaching, instruction, or related field. 

     

  • Skills: 

  • Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple assignments within a defined timeline
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively with program staff, faculty, and other stakeholders
  • Project coordination and project management skills using established planning tools and software
  • Knowledge of educational technologies, software, and learning platforms
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to develop and refine educational content for broad audiences

Preferences:

  • Classroom teaching experience, preferably at the high school level
  • Experience developing STEM or science curriculum
  • Familiarity with biology, biotechnology, or synthetic biology concepts
  • Experience adapting educational content for diverse learners
  • Experience supporting summer academic, outreach, or enrichment programs
  • Develop instructional and curriculum materials for use in high school classrooms as part of the NSF summer program.
  • Collaborate with Tabor Lab researchers to translate synthetic biology concepts into clear, age-appropriate educational content and learning activities.
  • Organize and revise lesson materials, program content, and related resources to support the goals and timeline of the summer program.
  • Assist with planning and coordination of program content to ensure materials are prepared for summer use and aligned with intended educational outcomes.
  • Support related administrative and programmatic activities necessary for successful implementation of the summer initiative.
  • Perform all other duties as assigned.
