This is a career track position with position placement based upon education, relevant job experience and certification(s). All levels require the ability to work at all Yavapai College campus’ and sites.

Carpenter Apprentice
The paid apprenticeship program requires a minimum of a three-year commitment, including successful completion of the Basic Residential Trades Certificate at the Yavapai College Verde Valley Skilled Trades Center in Clarkdale or at the Yavapai College Career and Technical Center in Prescott or both locations. In addition to attending classes, the apprentice will work alongside a senior technician for a total forty-hour work week.
  • Assists with maintenance related duties under the direct supervision of a journeyman HVAC, plumber, carpenter, or electrician
  • Operation of common hand and power tools to complete required repairs
  • Monitors systems daily and completes required checklists
  • Completion of work orders and related paperwork
  • Other duties as assigned

Technician I, Carpenter
Under direct supervision or lead work of a Carpenter Supervisor, Technician II, or III, performs duties assisting with carpentry tasks which include operation of equipment and completion of repairs. Other duties as assigned, including but not limited to on-call for snow removal.
  • Assists with maintenance related duties under the direct supervision of a journeyman carpenter
  • Operation of common hand and power tools to complete required repairs
  • Completion of work orders and related paperwork on an electronic work order system

Technician II, Carpenter
Under limited supervision performs a variety of general maintenance, renovation, repairs, and construction on campus buildings or campus grounds. Identifies problems, coordinates activities with other trades, and performs the work as defined.

Technician III, Carpenter
Be responsible for training and providing work direction to other carpentry technicians, for maintaining a safe working shop and for all shop materials. The Technician III will oversee some in-house construction projects, serve as a responsible party when the construction supervisor is on vacation or sick, and work with subcontractors to obtain bids and oversee onsite work. Requires flexible work schedule including availability on evenings, weekends, and at times when the College may be closed as well as on-call availability 24/7.Carpenter Apprentice
  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Valid AZ Driver’s License and a clean driving record
  • Ability to lift 25 pounds continuously/daily, 50 pounds occasionally, and team lift items over 50 pounds as required
  • Ability to follow work direction and work as a part of a team
  • Ability to adapt to workplace and work load changes
  • Knowledge of emergency and preventive maintenance
  • Ability to perform safe operation of vehicles, equipment and power tools
  • Accuracy and attention to detail with regards to work orders and time keeping
  • Perform work or deliver a wide variety of items to different addresses and through different routes via loading, unloading and operation of a YC vehicle
  • Regular attendance is an essential job function as it demonstrates dependability towards the performance of job duties
Carpenter I
  • Successful completion of YC Apprenticeship Program, Certificate or 1-2 years of experience
  • Valid AZ Driver’s License and a clean driving record
  • High school diploma or GED equivalent
  • Ability to follow work direction and work as a part of a team
  • Ability to adapt to workplace and work load changes
  • Ability to perform safe operation of vehicles, equipment and power tools
  • Accuracy and attention to detail with regards to work orders and time keeping
  • Perform work or deliver a wide variety of items to different addresses and through different routes via loading, unloading and operation of a YC vehicle
  • Regular attendance is an essential job function as it demonstrates dependability towards the performance of job duties
  • Aptitude to learn new tasks quickly
  • Ability to communicate effectively with peers and managers in person, by phone and email
  • Ability to work in an environment which promotes teamwork and strong work ethics
Carpenter II
All of Technician I requirements plus
  • Two years’ experience in the building construction/maintenance trades
  • Passing score on the NCCER Carpentry Level 1 Exam
  • Upon passing the above exam employee will demonstrate the following competencies:
  • Ability to safety operate all equipment and tools associated with construction/renovation projects
  • Hand Tools
  • Power Tools
  • Some Heavy Equipment
  • Familiarity with OSHA's Construction Standards and ability to work within the parameters of OSHA
  • Ability to read and interpret project specifications, operations and maintenance manuals
  • Ability to read and interpret construction drawings / blueprints
  • Knowledge of building materials, Fasteners and Anchors
  • Knowledge of floor systems
  • Knowledge of wall systems
  • Knowledge of Ceiling Joist and Roof Framing
  • Knowledge of Basic Stair Layouts
Carpenter III
All of Technician I &II requirements plus
  • At least five years of hands-on experience as a carpenter
  • Must pass the NCCER Carpentry Framing & Finishing Level 2 Exam
  • Upon passing the above exam employee will demonstrate the following competencies:
    • Ability to perform skilled work at a journeyman level in at least one additional trade
    • Ability to ensure code compliance on carpentry projects
    • Ability to organize and complete projects while adhering to deadlines
    • Ability to lead others through training and assigning work orders and provide input to Construction Manager for performance evaluations
    • Ability to manage construction projects including subcontractors
    • Ability to do project estimating, including materials needed and cost expectations
    • Ability to read commercial drawings
    • Knowledgeable in Cold-Formed Steel Framing
    • Knowledgeable in Exterior Finishing
    • Knowledgeable in Roofing Applications
    • Knowledgeable in Doors and Door Hardware
Carpenter Apprentice
  • Some work experience in skilled trades and willingness to learn from senior trades personnel
  • Experience working with public while providing customer service
  • Basic knowledge of construction and maintenance of buildings and grounds
  • Ability to communicate effectively with peers and managers in person, by phone and email
  • Work experience in a community college/higher education environment or commercial property
Carpenter I
  • Previous work experience in skilled trades
  • Basic knowledge of carpentry
