Technical Writer
Hybrid (3 days onsite) – Henrico County, VA
10-12-month Contract-to-Hire
Compensation: ~$45-50/hr (Final compensation will be dependent on experience, skills, etc.)
One of our Utility clients is seeking a Technical Writer to support documentation efforts within transmission operations. This role is responsible for developing, maintaining, and improving technical documentation that supports safe and reliable operation of their systems.
The Technical Writer will produce clear, accurate, and user-focused documentation including standard operating procedures (SOPs), operating manuals, job aids, templates, and reference materials. This position works closely with engineers, system operators, compliance personnel, and other subject matter experts to translate complex technical and operational information into structured, easy-to-follow documentation.
This is a hands-on role supporting a regulated environment, where documentation must align with internal governance processes and external regulatory frameworks. The Technical Writer will also play a key role in improving documentation consistency, usability, and lifecycle management across the organization.
Basic Qualifications:
· 2+ years of experience in technical writing or documentation-focused roles
· Demonstrated proficiency in technical writing principles and documentation standards
· Experience developing procedures, SOPs, or operational documentation
· Ability to translate complex technical or engineering concepts into clear, structured documentation
· Strong editing, proofreading, and version control skills
· Experience coordinating with subject matter experts (SMEs) to gather and validate information
· Ability to manage documentation through its full lifecycle (drafting, review, revision, updates)
· High attention to detail with a focus on accuracy, traceability, and consistency

Responsibilities:
· Develop, maintain, and improve technical documentation supporting transmission operations
· Create and update SOPs, operating manuals, job aids, templates, and reference materials
· Collaborate with engineers, operators, compliance teams, and SMEs to gather and validate content
· Translate technical and operational information into structured, user-friendly documentation
· Manage documentation lifecycle including drafting, coordinating reviews, incorporating feedback, and performing updates
· Apply consistent templates, formatting, terminology, and documentation standards
· Support documentation governance processes and ensure alignment with internal standards
· Maintain accurate documentation to support audits and compliance inquiries
· Assist with special projects related to system operations and documentation improvements
Environment & Additional Information:
· Work is primarily performed in an office environment
· Travel may be required
· Writing samples may be requested during the interview process
· Preferred degree in Technical Writing, Communications, English, Journalism, or related field
