ResponsibilitiesThe Emergency Department (ED) Technician provides essential direct and indirect patient care support under the supervision of a Registered Nurse (RN), playing a critical role in maintaining a safe, efficient, and patient-centered environment within the ED
The ED Technician performs a wide range of direct patient care activities, including vital sign assessment and documentation, completion of 12-lead EKGs, and bladder scans. This role involves assisting patients with activities of daily living (ADLs), such as personal hygiene, mobility, and toileting, and providing constant observation for high-risk patients to ensure their safety and well-being. Clinical responsibilities also encompass phlebotomy, specimen collection and labeling, and performing Point-of-Care Testing (POCT) as delegated. The technician assists with various procedures, including intubations, lumbar punctures, pelvic exams, joint aspirations, wound care, eye/ear irrigations, suture/staple removal, and foley leg bag application. A key aspect of the role is supporting orthopedic procedures , which includes the application of traction, OCL splints, and C-spine immobilization, along with providing patient education on the proper use of orthopedic devices and crutch walking. Additionally, the technician assists with patient triage activities under the direct supervision of an RN.
Beyond direct patient care, the ED Technician is integral to operational support and emergency preparedness. This includes maintaining a clean, organized, and well-stocked patient environment, encompassing cleaning and stocking patient rooms and supply areas, and assisting with the overall maintenance and inventory of ED supplies and equipment. The ED Technician actively participates in emergency response activities, such as code blue alerts, decontamination (decon), and Mass Casualty Incident (MCI) response. Effective communication with the healthcare team regarding patient status and delegated tasks is essential. The role also contributes to departmental development by assisting with orientation, training, and quality assurance initiatives. The ED Technician must demonstrate knowledge of growth and development principles across the life span, adapting care to meet age-specific patient needs. The role requires the ability to adapt to unpredictable situations and work flexible hours, including days, evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays.
