JOB SUMMARY

The Equipment Operator III (Distributor/Tack Truck) is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of an asphalt distributor truck to apply tack coats or prime coats on various paving and construction projects. This is a high-level skilled position that involves loading, hauling, and precisely spraying liquid asphalt (CSS-1H emulsion or liquid A/C) to ensure proper adhesion of new asphalt layers.

Beyond operation, the Equipment Operator acts as a technical lead on-site, monitoring temperature and application rates, performing routine maintenance, and assisting the paving crew when the distributor is not in active use. This role requires a commitment to Martin Marietta’s 'Safety First' culture and a high degree of autonomy.

KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Operate the distributor truck to apply liquid asphalt at specific temperatures and distribution rates as directed by the Foreman or project specifications.
  • Clean, set, and adjust spray bars and nozzles to ensure even coverage and prevent clogging or 'streaking' on the road surface.
  • Monitor and maintain the temperature of the asphalt emulsion within recommended limits using the truck’s heating and circulation systems.
  • Safely load tack oil from supply tanks, ensuring all valves and safety protocols are engaged before heating or transporting materials.
  • Perform comprehensive pre-shift and post-shift inspections (DVIR) focusing on fluid levels, tire pressure, lights, and leaks.
  • Conduct routine maintenance on the distributor system, including cleaning excess asphalt out of tanks and lubricating moving parts.
  • Identify and immediately report mechanical malfunctions or structural defects to the Supervisor or maintenance shop to ensure zero downtime.
  • Maintain a clean cab and exterior, ensuring the vehicle reflects Martin Marietta’s professional standards.
  • When not operating the distributor, assist the paving crew with tasks such as operating skid steers, rollers, or manual labor (shoveling, raking, or cleaning out the paver).
  • Maintain constant alertness for hazards, including overhead lines, ground crew, and other heavy equipment.
  • Ensure all federal, state, and local regulations are followed regarding the transport and application of dangerous goods/liquid asphalt to prevent spills or contamination
  • Maintain accurate daily logs of materials used, engine hours, and inspection results to support project billing and maintenance schedules.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education

High school diploma, GED, or relevant experience

CDL Class A Tanker andamp; Hazmat Endorsements

Work Experience

3 – 5 years of experience in heavy equipment operation, specifically with asphalt distributors or in a paving environment.

Physical Requirements

You must be able to lift and carry up to 75 lbs.

Ascending and descending up to 40 inches into equipment cabs or onto the distributor tank.

Frequent bending, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and balancing to inspect equipment and apply materials.

Using arms and hands extended overhead to operate controls or tools.

The ability to stand for extended periods and work long shifts.

Travel

On-site.

Working Conditions

All duties require outside assignments and require periods of work in all weather conditions, cold, wet, dry and dusty. Must be able to work in areas where noise levels are up to 85 dbs.

The hiring range for this position is $31+ exclusive of benefits or bonuses (discretionary and non-discretionary). The offered base compensation will be determined based on factors such as geographic location, business need, market conditions, proficiencies, skills, education, and experience.
