About this position:
This position's function is directing the survey unit in acquiring and providing land surveying data for use in design and other projects. This position is located in the Design Section of the Department of Transportation and Development in District 03 and reports directly to the ADA of Engineering. The incumbent must be self-motivated and be able to perform duties with minimal or no supervision and be able to interpret unforeseen conditions as they may arise. The incumbent must be able to supervise and coordinate the work for multiple survey crews and be able to prioritize the tasks assigned to the crews based on the need and priorities of the design section and district.

While in official capacity, DOTD employees must comply with applicable Louisiana and Civil Service laws, rules, and regulation as well as DOTD policies, procedures, manuals and directives.

Possession of a current Louisiana license to practice professional land surveying plus one of the following:

Two years of licensed land surveying experience; OR

Six years of professional land surveying experience.

NOTE:
Surveying experience gained while licensed as a professional land surveyor will be accepted as licensed land surveying experience.

Surveying experience gained after earning a bachelor’s degree and 30 semester hours in land surveying, mapping, and real property courses and prior to earning a Professional Land Surveyor license (e.g., as a Surveyor Intern or equivalent) will be accepted as professional-level surveying experience.

Job Duties:

  • Directs and manages two survey crews engaged in right-of-way acquisition, stake out, determination of correct boundaries, construction surveying, engineering, topographic surveys, and hydrographic surveys.

  • Coordinates with federal government agencies, city and parish governments, and levee board districts to collect, perform, process, and provide the preparing ownership and right-of-way maps, legal descriptions, and reports.

  • Checks and completes right-of-way maps, legal descriptions, and boundary surveys prepared by District 03 Design Section.

  • Provide professional surveying advice and assistance to other departments in the district.

  • Serves as an expert witness in court litigation for Attorney General Office.

  • Forensic surveys for accident site locations involving lawsuits brought against the Department.

  • Specialized Knowledge skills and abilities: Conduct boundary surveys, route surveys, topographic surveys, hydrographic surveys, abstract research, and prepare right of way maps, all conforming to DOTD and industry practices and policies.

  • Required Licensure: Current Louisiana Professional Land Surveyor License with a minimum of two years of experience. Valid Louisiana Class E Drivers License before appointment.

  • Types of equipment used for the job: Survey Grade GPS System, LSU's C4G net, Electronic Total Station, Manuel Total Station, Survey Grade Level, Data Collectors, Metal Collector, Utility Tracing Locator, 4-Wheeler equipped with GPS System, cell phone etc.
