This position offers an opportunity to work as a Survey Field Technician, supporting a Survey Crew Chief in collecting precise field data for a wide variety of projects, including transportation surveys, site development, boundary surveys, GPS surveys, and construction staking. The role is primarily field-based in central Ohio, with occasional office tasks, and provides strong growth potential, hands-on training with a licensed surveyor, and frequent opportunities to develop technical surveying and CAD skills.

  • Assist the Crew Chief with field survey activities for transportation surveys, site development surveys, boundary surveys, GPS surveys, and construction staking.
  • Effectively read and use maps, drawings, plans, and aerial photographs to understand and assess project needs.
  • Assist in the recovery of survey control points and monumentation to support accurate survey measurements.
  • Support construction layout activities, including staking and verifying field locations according to construction documents.
  • Obtain invert elevations and subsurface utility information as required for project documentation.
  • Perform field photo documentation to record existing conditions and project progress.
  • Apply basic knowledge and techniques of surveying and advanced mathematics under the direction of the Crew Chief.
  • Maintain survey equipment in good working condition and initiate repairs or service requests when necessary.
  • Remain current on surveying practices, guidelines, and best practices by learning from team members and on-the-job experience.
  • Research project documentation, including deeds, plats, and other records, to support field and office survey tasks.
  • Set up project binders, organize field notes, download and organize survey data, and perform other office-related tasks as needed.
  • Assist with preparing drawings and maps using Carlson Survey, AutoCAD Civil 3D, and/or MicroStation when required.
  • Collaborate with the survey team across various disciplines such as builder services, commercial site development, land development, utilities, and small boundary projects.
  • Follow company safety procedures and standards while working outdoors year-round in various weather conditions.

  • Prior experience working outdoors in a construction or related environment.
  • Willingness and ability to learn quickly and adapt to company standards and field procedures.
  • Ability to read and interpret maps, drawings, plans, and aerial photographs.
  • Basic understanding of surveying concepts and advanced mathematics or the ability to learn them on the job.
  • Strong attention to detail when collecting and recording field data.
  • Ability to assist with the maintenance and basic troubleshooting of survey equipment.
  • Computer literacy sufficient to download data, organize project files, and support basic office tasks.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Prior surveying experience is preferred but not required.
  • Experience with Topcon data collectors, robotic total stations, and GPS survey equipment is a plus.
  • Experience with construction stakeout, ALTA surveys, topographic surveys, and land surveying is beneficial.
  • Familiarity with Carlson Survey software is a plus.
  • Experience using AutoCAD or AutoCAD Civil 3D for survey-related drafting is a plus.
  • Experience using MicroStation for survey or civil design work is a plus.
  • Knowledge of survey CAD workflows, construction documents, and total station operation is helpful.
  • Relevant degree or coursework in surveying, engineering, or a related field is welcomed, even without prior work experience.
  • Desire for professional growth within a survey group and interest in long-term career development in surveying.
  • Interest in receiving one-on-one training with a licensed surveyor to build technical and professional skills.

Work Environment

This role is almost entirely field-based, with the majority of time spent outdoors on active project sites in central Ohio. Approximately 95% of projects are local, primarily within the I-270 loop, and most travel occurs in a company vehicle. The survey group supports multiple disciplines, including builder services for residential new builds, commercial site development, land development (including residential), utilities and infrastructure projects, and small boundary and lot split surveys. Work involves using modern survey equipment such as Topcon data collectors, robotic total stations, GPS equipment, and survey-related software including Carlson Survey, AutoCAD Civil 3D, and MicroStation. Occasional office work includes downloading field data, organizing project files, researching deeds and plats, and assisting with drafting survey drawings and maps. The environment emphasizes continuous learning, one-on-one training with a licensed surveyor, and clear opportunities for advancement and pay increases based on performance rather than fixed review schedules. The position requires comfort working outdoors year-round in varying weather and site conditions, following safety procedures and appropriate field attire for construction and survey sites.
