Job Title: Survey CAD TechnicianJob DescriptionThe Survey CAD Technician will prepare high-quality civil engineering drawings and process LiDAR survey data into usable Civil 3D files to support a wide range of infrastructure and site development projects. This role combines CAD drafting, survey data management, and LiDAR processing, and offers the opportunity to work on large, complex projects within a collaborative and growing engineering team.
Responsibilities
- Prepare detailed engineering drawings from sketches, general engineering and design information, verbal instructions, and notes using Civil 3D.
- Create computer-generated civil engineering drawings in accordance with established drafting standards and procedures.
- Review all drawings and deliverables to ensure completeness, accuracy, and alignment with engineering requirements before submission to engineers.
- Process LiDAR data collected by surveying drones, including importing, managing, and organizing large datasets.
- Use LP360 to convert point clouds generated from LiDAR into formats that can be transferred and utilized in Civil 3D.
- Transform LiDAR imagery and point cloud data into accurate civil 3D models and surfaces for design and analysis.
- Support topographical and other surveying workflows by integrating field survey data into CAD drawings.
- Work with civil-type drawings related to water, wastewater, sewer, and water supply systems, as well as other civil infrastructure projects.
- Utilize AutoCAD and Civil 3D to draft, edit, and update plans, profiles, sections, and details for civil engineering projects.
- Apply GIS knowledge to support mapping and data integration where needed.
- Use Microsoft Excel and Word to document work, maintain records, and support project reporting.
- Collaborate closely with engineers, surveyors, and other team members to clarify design intent and resolve drafting or data issues.
- Communicate clearly with project stakeholders to understand requirements and provide status updates on drafting and data processing tasks.
- Manage workload efficiently to keep LiDAR and survey data processing from becoming a bottleneck in project delivery.
- Continuously learn and adapt to new tools, workflows, and technologies related to Civil 3D, LiDAR, and survey data processing.
Essential Skills- Minimum of 3 years of experience as a CAD Technician, CAD drafter, and/or Surveyor with a focus on civil-type drawings.
- Proficiency with AutoCAD for producing civil engineering drawings.
- Hands-on experience with AutoCAD Civil 3D, especially for civil and survey-related drafting.
- Experience working with Civil 3D in a production environment for 2–5 years in a similar role.
- Surveying experience, including LiDAR and topographical surveying workflows.
- Ability to process and convert LiDAR data, including working with point clouds and integrating them into Civil 3D.
- Experience using LP360 to process LiDAR data and transfer it into Civil 3D.
- Knowledge of GIS software and its application in civil and survey projects.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office products, including Excel and Word.
- Experience with Trimble (Tremble) survey equipment or similar survey data collection tools.
- Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, to work effectively with engineers and team members.
- Demonstrated ability to learn quickly and adapt to new software, tools, and workflows.
- Ability to produce accurate, detailed drawings and maintain high attention to detail in data processing and drafting tasks.
Additional Skills & Qualifications- Minimum of a high school diploma or technical school training in drafting, CAD, surveying, or a related field.
- Experience supporting civil projects involving water, wastewater, sewer systems, and water supply infrastructure.
- Background in civil CAD drafting, including plans for site development and utility systems.
- Familiarity with Revit or other design software is beneficial, especially in multidisciplinary environments.
- Experience working in an engineering or survey-focused firm with multiple concurrent projects.
- Strong organizational skills to manage multiple datasets, drawings, and project files efficiently.
- Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a close-knit team environment.
- Interest in ongoing professional development related to LiDAR, drone surveying, Civil 3D, and GIS technologies.
Work EnvironmentThis position is based in an office environment within a growing engineering firm of approximately 25 employees. The team works closely together in a family-oriented atmosphere, fostering collaboration and knowledge sharing on a wide variety of large and complex projects. You will work primarily on computers using AutoCAD, Civil 3D, LP360, GIS tools, and Microsoft Office, with regular interaction with engineers, surveyors, and other technical staff. The role starts as a 12-month contract-to-hire opportunity, with the potential for permanent employment that includes strong insurance options, additional benefits, 10 days of paid time off, and a flexible schedule.
