The Jan. 13th Supreme Court of the United States decision that the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services federal COVID-19 vaccine mandate will move forward requires UPMC to ensure individuals either get vaccinated or receive a requested exemption by Jan. 27th. For individuals who choose an mRNA vaccine, a second dose of Pfizer or Moderna must be received by Monday, Feb. 28th, or within the designated timeframe after your first dose is received.
Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) or Technologist Surgery Certified (TSC) required. Staff employed to practice surgical technology by the health care facility on or before the effective date of the law (12/28/2020) or who were employed as a Surg Tech at another health care facility two years before effective date of the law are grandfathered and therefore not required to have certification. New graduates of a program sponsored by nationally recognized institutional or programmatic accreditation can work for six months prior to certification, but must be certified within six months of program completion. Exception: A health care facility may employ individuals who do not meet the certification requirements if, after a diligent and thorough effort has been made, they are unable to employ a sufficient number of qualified Surg Techs who meet the requirements (i.e. certification) and a written record of efforts is made and retained at the health care facility. (1. Recruitment efforts are documented and can be supplied for this record. 2. The supply of certified or eligible to be certified surg techs does not meet the needs of the organization.)
Completion of a formal Surgical Technician program offered by a community or junior college, vocational school, university, hospital, or the military.

Continuing Education Requirements: Compliance with continuing education requirements specified by the credentialing organization for certification. Individuals who are not certified must complete 30 hours of continuing education every two years.
Specialty Experience: Surgical specialties include, but are not limited to, general, orthopedic, vascular, plastic and reconstructive, obstetrics and gynecology, thoracic, ophthalmic, neurosurgery, organ procurement, and endoscopic surgical settings. Access to medications is limited to the distribution of the medication to the nurse.
Demonstrated competence in operating room as surgical technologist.
Minimum of 1-year operating room experience is required.
Must be able to independently scrub for major general, major vascular and orthopedic surgeries.
Must be able to scrub in at least 2 specialties, included but not limited to general, orthopedic, vascular, plastics and reconstructive, obstetrics and gynecology, thoracic, ophthalmic, neurosurgery, organ procurement and endoscopic surgical settings.
The ability to scrub in any specialty is highly preferred.
Must work 36 hours per week, 72 hours in a bi-weekly pay period, including but not limited to: day, night, weekend and holiday shifts.
Must be willing to work 8-, 10- and 12-hour shifts, depending on need to operating room assigned.
On call required after 6 months employment in role.
Must travel to all UPMC facilities including but not limited to UPMC facilities in Southwestern, Northwestern, Central, West Central and North Central PA, UPMC Chautauqua (NY), and UPMC Western Maryland.
Must rotate assignments on 6-week basis with potential to redeploy to another facility mid-assignment.
Cerner or Epic electronic health record experience preferred.
