JOB SUMMARY

The Cultural Ambassador Supervisor coordinates and oversees cultural and language services for UVA Health Northern VA & Culpeper facilities, ensuring smooth operations, adherence to policies, and high performance by the team.

Competencies

  • Supervision & Operations:
    • Provides communication and updates to patients and guests and ensures their needs are being met, when applicable.
    • Supervise Cultural Ambassador team members, including task distribution, shift scheduling, and monitoring projects to ensure acceptable performance standards are maintained.
    • Implement policies and procedures, and enforce departmental rules and regulations established by leadership.
    • Review processes, identifying and recommending opportunities for improvement.
    • Hold team members accountable for customer service standards and initiate remediation when needed.
    • Maintain confidentiality in all matters related to patient care and visitor issues.
    • Employ technology and other resources to provide Language and Sign Language Services to different departments within the assigned facility.
    • Drive/travel to multiple facilities/locations as needed
  • Interpreting & Translation Services:
    • Provide face-to-face medical interpreting for all UVA Health Northern VA & Culpeper Interdisciplinary Team members.
    • Provide telephone interpretation services, as needed.
    • Translate system documents to Spanish.
    • Coordinate translation of documents for other language types.
    • Provide medical document translations for UVA Community Health facilities, as needed.
  • Patient & Clinical Support:
    • Work with clinical leadership in rounding on patients, communicating treatment plans, and, if applicable, contacting families regarding patient care.
    • Provide cultural information to facilitate support for a treatment plan.
    • Ensure that information about the patient's outpatient services, hospitalization (i.e., advance directives, consents from treatment, diagnosis and prognosis, treatment plan, follow-up appointments, and Health Care Education) is accurately communicated.
    • Actively participate in identifying areas of opportunity to improve the experience for patients and guests.

The incumbent may be asked to perform additional duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education:High School Diploma or GED required. Associate’s degree preferred.

Experience: 4 years of experience in interpreting services required. 2 years of supervisory experience preferred. Refer to the Life Support Training Policy for additional details.

Licensure: National Board of Certification for Medical Interpreters (NBCMI) or Certified Healthcare Interpreter (CHI).

Additional Skills/Requirements Required: Complete departmental oral and written translation assessment. Proficient in the use of computer software, including the Microsoft Office suite or similar. Ability to effectively communicate with all levels of authority.

Physical Demand Code:Sedentary to Light Physical Demand: The job requires frequent sitting, standing, walking, and bending/stooping. Frequent repetitive body movements. Proficient communicative, auditory, and visual skills. Attention to detail and ability to write legibly. Ability to lift/push/pull up to 20 lbs. occasionally.
