Sanctuary for Families is New York's leading service provider and advocate for survivors of domestic violence, sex trafficking and related forms of gender violence. Every year, Sanctuary empowers thousands of adults and children to move from fear and abuse to safety and stability, transforming lives through a comprehensive range of services. We provide a range of wrap-around services to help survivors rebuild their lives in the aftermath of abuse, and work to end gender violence through three key strategies: direct services, outreach and training, and systems-change advocacy. Our services are available in 11 locations throughout New York City.



POSITION OVERVIEW

The Supervising Attorney provides legal services and supervision in complex cases for human trafficking survivors in immigration, criminal justice advocacy, vacatur, and other pre- and post- conviction relief. The Supervising Attorney provides comprehensive, trauma-informed, and wrap-around services for our clients through direct representation, case management assistance, and community education and coalition-building. The Supervising Attorney supports the ATI Director with strategic planning and professional development of ATI staff.


RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Screens and provides legal representation for victims of human trafficking, domestic abuse, and/or gender violence, along with their eligible family members and potential derivatives.
  • Supervises pro bono attorneys, staff attorney(s), and oversees supervision of legal interns, law student fellows, and volunteers.
  • Provides technical assistance to senior staff attorneys and other legal staff on cases presenting novel and complex legal and factual issues.
  • Provides targeted and strategic advocacy for ATI and Sanctuary clients and programs through engagement in federal, state, and municipal rule-making and public policy processes, as appropriate.
  • Educates legal staff on best practices and risk assessment in preparing case records for possible appeal and litigation, and tracks federal and state litigation trends.
  • Advocates for clients in a wide variety of legal and social systems and with different government institutions, including in immigration, criminal justice, public benefits, etc.
  • Represents Sanctuary for Families at service provider and community events relevant to Anti-Trafficking work.
  • Conducts specific outreach initiatives to vulnerable and under-represented communities through culturally competent service provision, strategic outreach events and coalition building.
  • Provides trainings and technical legal assistance on human trafficking to law enforcement, judicial, community-based, social-justice based, and legal service organizations.
  • Collaborates with clinicians, attorneys, health care providers, local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies, and district attorney's offices, and any other organization, to secure the best results for clients.
  • Together with the Director of the Anti-Trafficking Initiative, supports the identification of relevant grant opportunities, and related grant funding research, proposals, and reports.
  • Collaborates with the Director of the Anti-Trafficking Initiative in recruitment and hiring, training, supporting professional development and resiliency of ATI staff, organizational infrastructure and strategic planning.
  • Performs other department or agency-related duties or special projects as directed by the Director of the Anti-Trafficking Initiative.
Requirements:

  • JD Degree Required;
  • Admission to the New York State Bar; or eligible reciprocity from another state or jurisdiction
  • At least (5+) years or more of experience practicing immigration and/or criminal law, preferably in the public interest and/or government sectors;
  • Knowledge of federal and state laws that pertain to human trafficking, especially immigration and criminal law;
  • Experience in the fields of human trafficking or co-occurring forms of gender based violence preferred;
  • Strong interpersonal, organizational, public speaking, and leadership skills;
  • Excellent judgment;
  • Bilingual English and a relevant community language (e.g. Spanish, Mandarin);
  • Strong writing, legal and policy research, and analytical skills;
  • Ability to work independently and under pressure;
  • Ability to multi-task, set priorities and navigate complex legal cases;
  • Ability to motivate, inspire, and manage staff;
  • Familiarity with clinical treatment modalities for survivors of complex and intergenerational trauma preferred;
  • Deep understanding of and ability to work well with people of diverse national, ethnic, cultural, religious, and socioeconomic backgrounds; and
  • Energetic and passionate about Sanctuary's mission of ending gender violence and human trafficking.



Budgeted Salary: $85,000 - $92,000 annually


Work position is currently Hybrid; must be able to meet job location schedule obligations


Vaccination Policy: Proof of vaccination or proof of 1st dose with scheduled 2nd dose within 30 days is required.
