The East Bay Regional Park District (EBRPD) is a full-service governmental agency stewarding a metropolitan system of public open space parklands and trails in Alameda and Contra Costa counties east of the San Francisco Bay. WHAT YOU’LL BE DOING:

There are currently three internship opportunities available within the Acquisition, Stewardship, and Planning Division.

Department:Stewardship
Assessment of Historical Fisheries Survey Data
Required fields of study:Natural Resources, Fisheries, Wildlife
Preferred field of study: Biology

The Stewardship Department is seeking an intern to support a focused data digitization and analysis project for historical fisheries survey data from Redwood and Wildcat Creeks. Under the guidance of Fisheries and Archives staff, the intern will be trained to enter data and conduct basic analysis. The project will involve digitizing a defined subset of archival data, validating entries, and performing a limited review of fish population trends across time. The project provides hands-on experience in data management and analysis, resulting in a validated dataset and summary memo on fish community trends to inform conservation and restoration efforts.

Field Mapping & GIS
Required fields of study:Conservation planning, ecology, geography, enviro studies, natural resources, computer science, or GIS

This internship will support a focused mapping and data collection project for the Land Acquisition Department. Under the guidance of staff, the intern will assist with field data collection using iPads to ground-truth the location of EBRPD operations. The intern will also review existing maps and records; compile collected data and support the development of updated maps depicting licensed areas where the District operates parks and trails.

The project provides hands-on experience in field data collection, mapping, and land records management, while improving the accuracy and usability of land license records.


Department: Planning
Conservation Lands & Community Engagement
Preferred fields of study:Planning, community engagement, natural resource management

This internship will support a focused planning project within the Planning Department. Under the guidance of staff, the intern will assist with conducting research, validating data across platforms, preparing conservation lands overview documentation, and supporting supervised site visits at selected conservation easement properties.

In addition, the intern will support youth engagement activities related to the District Plan, assisting with event preparation, observing engagement sessions, and documenting participant feedback. The intern will compile a summary report highlighting key themes and demographics from these activities.


  • Under the direction of the department head of a department, the intern is assigned to work on various projects up to forty (40) hours per week, for a short-term period of approximately ten to twelve (10-12) weeks with a maximum of 375 hours between June - August.
  • Interns in the assigned departments would handle projects designed to be a working and learning experience in any of several fields in that department.
  • Work on various projects as assigned by the department head.
  • Become familiar with District policies and practices together with the reasoning behind these procedures.
  • Gain insight into being an effective decision-maker within the context of projected career goals.
  • Develop the ability to initiate or reject situations that are presented for intern’s evaluation.
  • Prepares reports.
  • Compiles and analyzes data pertaining to assigned projects.

Physical Demands

Some positions may include field-based work and may require the ability to perform physical activities in outdoor environments. Interns may assist with conducting pond and stream surveys and perform field mapping work, which involves walking on trails and through parklands.

Physical demands may include:

  • Walking or hiking several miles over uneven terrain, including slopes and natural surfaces
  • Standing for extended periods of time during field activities
  • Bending, kneeling, or reaching when conducting surveys or collecting data
  • Carrying light to moderate equipment (e.g., field gear, tablets/iPads, sampling tools)
  • Working in varying weather conditions, including heat, sun exposure, and damp or muddy environments
  • Accessing remote or natural areas with limited infrastructure

Education: Must be in attendance at, or on legitimate leave from, a high school, trade school, college or university. Academic background compatible to departmental assigned projects.

License: Must possess a valid California driver’s license. This requirement may be waived at the discretion of the General Manager for disabled or other applicants where the projects are such that a valid California Driver’s License would not be necessary.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:
  • Must pass a Level 1 background check.
