Summer Bus Driver(Day Camp)

The Summer Bus Driver is responsible for the safe and efficient transportation of children, staff, and authorized personnel to and from camp programs, field trips, and other designated professionalism while representing the Parks & Recreation Department. Essential Functions/Typical Tasks.

  • Operate vehicles in accordance with federal, state, and local laws as well as departmental policies.


  • Safely transport children and staff to camp programs, field trips, and scheduled destinations.


  • Conduct daily pre-trip and post-trip vehicle inspections; report any maintenance or safety concerns promptly.


  • Maintain a clean, orderly, and safe bus environment.


  • Enforce safety rules and ensure proper behavior of passengers at all times. Discuss any disciplinary concerns with Day Camp Staff and Program Supervisor.


  • Maintain accurate records of mileage, fuel, and trip logs as required.


  • Communicate effectively and professionally with camp staff, parents, and participants.


  • Support camp staff during transitions and assist as needed when not driving.


  • Perform related tasks as required.


  • Prior experience transporting children via activity or school bus or working with youth preferred, especially experiencewith childrenaged 5-12.

  • Must have the abilitytoworkas amemberof ateam as well as the abilitytointeractwith campers, family,and public. Strong commitment to safety and accident prevention.

  • Ability to remain calm and respond appropriately in emergency situations.

  • Reliable, punctual, and able to work during the summer camp season (June-Early August; approx. 7 weeks).


Licenses/Certifications:

Valid NC Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with Passenger (P) and School Bus (S) endorsement required.

Current DOT Medical Examiner’s Certificate.


Special Requirements:

Must beaminimumof 21years of age.

This position is a temporary/seasonal and subjectto the maximum 1,000-hour rule per calendar year.












This work requires the occasional exertion of up to 25 of force; work regularly requires speaking or hearing; ability to sit for extended periods while operating a motor vehicle; frequent standing, walking, using hands to finger, handle or feel, and occasionally requires climbing or balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling, reaching with hands and arms, pushing or pulling and lifting; work requires depth perception, color perception and peripheral vision; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; work is generally in a moderately noisy location(e.g. recreation center; pool area; visitor center; day trip facilities).
