Position Summary:

The Structural Engineer III acts as a senior technical lead on complex design packages for high-voltage substations and associated infrastructure. This position demands a high level of structural engineering expertise, strong coordination capabilities, and the ability to mentor junior team members. The Engineer III independently manages structural components of mid- to large-scale projects, performs advanced finite element analyses, upholds design integrity, and frequently engages with clients, project managers, and construction teams.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Lead the structural engineering design for substation projects, including steel structures, foundations, equipment supports, and control buildings.
  • Execute and review advanced structural analyses and detailed calculations.
  • Prepare and evaluate comprehensive design deliverables such as drawings, specifications, and engineering reports.
  • Collaborate with project management, procurement, and construction teams to ensure designs are practical and meet quality expectations.
  • Facilitate design reviews and address technical challenges across multiple disciplines.
  • Assist with proposal preparation, scope development, scheduling, cost estimating, and budget oversight.
  • Mentor and support the development of junior engineers and designers, including providing technical guidance and training.
  • Participate in site inspections, construction-phase support, and forensic assessments.
  • Contribute to the advancement of design standards, process improvements, and industry best practices.
  • Carry out additional responsibilities as assigned by management.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil or Structural Engineering, or a related discipline, from an ABET-accredited program is required.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license, or the ability to obtain one within one year of employment.
  • Structural Engineer (SE) license is considered an asset.
  • Minimum of eight (8) years of experience in structural design; experience with substations or utility infrastructure is advantageous.
  • In-depth knowledge of structural analysis and steel and concrete design methodologies.
  • Strong familiarity with relevant standards, including ASCE 7, AISC, ACI 318, NESC, and IEEE.

Technical Skills:

  • Solid understanding of structural analysis and design fundamentals.
  • Proficiency in drafting and design tools such as AutoCAD and MicroStation.
  • Experience with advanced structural analysis software (e.g., STAAD, RISA, SAP2000, ETABS, L-Pile).
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications (Excel, Word, PowerPoint).
  • High level of accuracy and attention to detail with a focus on quality deliverables.
  • Effective communication skills with the ability to lead discussions and collaborate across multidisciplinary teams.
  • Demonstrated ability to mentor team members and contribute to technical growth within the department.
  • Capability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines in a dynamic, fast-paced environment.
