*PLEASE NOTE* This posting serve to a Designer/Engineer position within our Substation Control Design group. We are open to considering all levels of experience, provided you meet the basic qualifications outlined below.

WORK LOCATION, SCHEDULE, & TRAVEL

  • This position will be based out of Atlanta, GASome relocation assistance may be available if the successful candidate does not currently live within a reasonable commuting distance.
  • Work schedule (both in-office and telecommute); currently four (4) days in-office and one (1) day telecommute (subject to adjustment).
  • This position will require some travel (day and overnight, up to 25%).

JOB SUMMARY

This position is responsible for the design of Southern Company’s Transmission and Distribution Substations. The Designer/Engineer will produce engineering drawings, specifications, and material requirements for substation projects with an emphasis on safety, quality, scheduling, and costs.

JOB QUALIFICATIONS

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering; Electrical preferred (Engineer)
  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering Technology (Designer)
  • Associate Degree with minimum 5 years relevant industry experience (Designer)
  • No Degree with minimum of 8 years relevant industry experience (Designer)

Experience:

  • Experience in Transmission &/or Distribution Substation Operations for an electric power utility company is preferred. 
  • Experience in the field of Substation Engineering, Field Services, Switchboard Wiring, Power Delivery, Substation Maintenance, or Substation Construction is preferred. 
  • Experience working with document management & estimating systems such as Transmission Estimating and Management System (TEAMS), STOMP, MAXIMO, SCST Vault is preferred. 
  • Proficiency in using Microsoft Office products is required.
  • Experience using AutoDesk Suite (including AutoCAD Electrical) or higher is preferred. 
  • Substation protective relay testing experience along with control scheme testing and commissioning experience a strong plus.
  • Understanding of substation protection & control scheme operation is preferred.
  • The ability to create Substation Control Design drawings from a single line and wiring diagram is preferred.

  • A good understanding of utility electric grid operations is preferred. 
  • Knowledge of basic electrical power system theory is preferred.

MAJOR JOB RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:

  • Make SAFETY our number one priority using a “Safety First” mentality and leading by example.
  • Prepare high quality design packages needed to construct (new or modify existing) substations using CAD-based or impedance modeling tools, based on Southern Company design standards.
  • Coordinate and communicate with other design disciplines associated with the Substation Physical Design project.
  • Interact with manufacturers, vendors, and Southern Company committee members to resolve equipment and material issues. 
  • Provide support for Substation Construction, Field Services, Project Management, and Transmission Maintenance. 
  • Perform site visits for projects, including pre-construction meetings, during construction and post-construction. Some overnight travel will be required.
  • Handling multiple tasks simultaneously, setting priorities, and using effective time management and organizational skills to achieve project team goals.
  • Serve as part of a storm restoration team when requested after storm events, predominately, but not limited to the Southern Company service territory.
  • Design protective relay & control schemes utilizing microprocessor-based relay systems in both green and brown field projects. 
  • Specify and order material for substation design packages, including stock, shop fabricated, and non-stock material. 
  • Transmit drawing packages and supporting specifications using the Transmission Engineering job transmittal program.
