About this role

The Substance Abuse Counselor provides direct care services to patients with mental, emotional, and substance abuse issues, working closely with the treatment team to fulfill the interdisciplinary treatment process for patients with a dual diagnosis. This includes developing and conducting program activities for education and treatment related to substance abuse, as well as providing individual and group counseling sessions. The counselor is responsible for patient assessment and the development and implementation of Recovery Plans, within the company's standards.

Additional Details

You’ll conduct assessments and intakes, develop treatment plans, lead group counseling sessions, and provide individual support to patients at varying stages of recovery. Much of the work centers on group facilitation, behavior change, and relapse prevention, while also addressing co-occurring mental health needs. You’ll document care in the medical record, track progress, and ensure compliance with standards. A key part of the role is preparing patients for reentry by connecting them to community resources and building realistic plans for continued treatment after release, making a direct impact on long-term outcomes. Certification/Licensure in one of the following is required: -Substance Use Disorder (SUD) Counselor (SUDCC-II or III) -Certified Alcohol and Drug Counselor (CADC-II or III) -Certified Addiction Treatment Counselor (CATC-II or III)

What you bring to the table

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in a social services related field.
  • Or Certified in the substance abuse field
  • Or Experience in the substance abuse field

Experience

  • Ability to work with computers
  • Ability to work with software used by the department.
  • Relevant experience in provision of addiction counseling services

Licenses/Certifications

  • Licensed or Certification in an addiction counseling specialty, such as: Certified Substance Abuse Counselor: CATC II or III; SUDCC II or III; CADC II or III or above.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain CPR certification

What you will do

  • Conducts group and individual substance abuse (SA) activities for patients and develops related programs.
  • Assesses and evaluates patients for co-occurring disorders and determines the level of care required.
  • Ensures timely completion of all necessary records and reports.
  • Maintains professional development through in-service education and other resources, while complying with Human Resources requirements.
  • Shows cultural sensitivity, treating each patient as an individual, and considering their cultural background when providing care and treatment.
