Student Services Specialist (Native American Culture)

JOB SUMMARY:
To work in collaboration with various district, city, county, and private agencies to provide case management services and instructional assistance in support of the District’s Title VI program in the education and support of Native American students; and to serve in a liaison capacity between the school district, the Native American community and local tribes.

SUPERVISION:
Receives general supervision from a designated supervisor.
Exercises no supervision.ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Monitors and completes the Title VI Indian Education Formula Grant.
  • Oversees case management activities for Native American students and families.
  • Supports a program specialist, or classroom teacher, with realia for classrooms related to Native American history and culture.
  • Provides instructional assistance and resources to students (i.e. counseling, parenting, and or drug and alcohol rehabilitation services, etc.)
  • Assists students in improving in academic skills.
  • Assists families in securing documentation of tribal affiliations.
  • Oversees the progress monitoring of all Native American students as part of Multi-Tiered System of Support (MTSS).
  • Meets with students identified as habitual truants and/or chronic behavior problems in order to establish rehabilitation or family service plans.
  • Meets with school administrators, counselors, and teachers to periodically review attendance and academic progress of Native American students.
  • Attends and coordinates the district's Native American events, celebrations, field trips, and parent/family workshops and meetings.
  • Maintains records of students and families.
  • Attends a variety of meetings, workshops, committees, trainings, and conferences.
  • May serve as a District representative at Native American Resource Center, San Manuel, Morongo, Soboba, Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians, and Torres Martinez Desert Cahuilla Indians Reservations.
  • Uses personal vehicle for travel related to duties.
  • Performs job related duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Experience and education/training: Any combination of experience and education/training that demonstrates an ability to perform the essential functions of the job.

Two (2) years of experience working with Native American children. -AND-


High school graduation or the equivalent. -AND-


Two years of college (at least 48 semester units; or 72 quarter units.) -OR-


Possession of an Associate’s (or higher) degree. -OR-


Pass assessment that demonstrates knowledge of and the ability to assist in teaching reading, writing, and mathematics reading, writing, and mathematics readiness.


Experience in Native American cultural art and/or arts and crafts desirable.

Licenses/Certificates/Registrations:
Possession of a valid California driver's license, and ability to maintain liability auto insurance

ADDITIONAL SALARY INFORMATION:This is a non-exempt position, Regular Classified Salary Range 42. Most positions in this class work 8hours/12months. The probationary period for employees in this classification is six (6) months (or 130 working days of paid service).

THE EXAMINATION:
  • Written Examination. WEIGHT: 100%

  • Assessment Examination. WEIGHT: Pass/Fail. This requirement can be met by one of the following: Completion of at least 48 semester units or (72 quarter units) at the college level, -OR- Possession of an Associate’s or higher-level degree, -OR- pass the Assessment Examination.

  • Only qualified candidates will be invited to participate in the examination process.

  • Successful candidates who pass all parts of the examination process will be placed on the eligibility list in order of their relative merit.

  • Candidates will be notified in accordance with the Personnel Commission Rules.

  • This eligibility list will be active for a period of (1) year.
