Job Title: Structural Steel Inspector

Job Description

The Structural Steel Inspector travels to industrial facilities to inspect structural steel, equipment, and related components, identify deficiencies, and document findings in collaboration with an engineering team. This role combines hands-on field work at height with detailed reporting, drawing interpretation, and close coordination with technical professionals to help ensure the safety and integrity of critical structures.

Responsibilities

  • Travel regularly to a wide range of industrial job sites and complete site-specific safety training to understand facility hazards such as overhead cranes, stair grating, and other structural risks.
  • Complete daily work permits and all required documentation before starting inspection activities.
  • Inspect structural steel, equipment, and related components for deficiencies, deterioration, or damage using visual methods and basic hand tools.
  • Document inspection findings thoroughly, including written notes and digital photographs that clearly illustrate observed conditions.
  • Collaborate closely with engineering staff to assess the severity of deficiencies and help prioritize recommended repairs or follow-up actions.
  • Read and interpret engineering and structural drawings to accurately identify, label, and record the locations of observed deficiencies within the facility.
  • Review and apply relevant inspection specifications, codes, and standards for the structures being evaluated.
  • Create clear field sketches to show the locations of structures or equipment within the facility and to support accurate reporting and future reference.
  • Work safely at heights using man lifts and other approved access equipment, following all safety procedures and fall protection requirements.
  • Use basic hand tools in the field to assist with inspections and access to components where appropriate.
  • Prepare concise, accurate inspection reports that summarize findings, include supporting photos and sketches, and communicate issues clearly to stakeholders.
  • Participate in ongoing training to learn and further develop inspection techniques, including nondestructive testing and related methods as needed.

Essential Skills

  • At least 2 years of experience as a millwright or facility maintenance mechanic, with strong exposure to industrial equipment and facilities.
  • Ability and willingness to travel approximately 80% or more of the time, including frequent overnight trips across multiple surrounding states.
  • Capability to work safely at heights up to approximately 150 feet using man lifts and similar equipment.
  • Ability to be respirator fit-tested and work in environments where respiratory protection is required.
  • Strong aptitude for learning and the ability to be trained into the structural inspection role.
  • Basic proficiency with hand tools used in field inspection and maintenance activities.
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings and structural plans.
  • Report writing skills, including the ability to document findings clearly and accurately.
  • Familiarity with or ability to learn software such as AutoCAD for creating or interpreting drawings and sketches.
  • Comfort working in fast-paced, changing environments and adapting to different facility types.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience in welding, structural steel work, or structural engineering concepts.
  • Experience with steel inspection or structural inspections in industrial facilities.
  • Nondestructive testing (NDT) experience or certification, including NDT Level II, is highly beneficial.
  • Man lift certification or prior documented experience operating man lifts.
  • Experience with overhead crane inspection or maintenance.
  • OSHA 10-hour safety training or similar safety-related coursework.
  • Experience working in heavy industrial settings such as manufacturing plants, steel mills, aerospace facilities, or similar environments.
  • Comfort working in small field teams and coordinating with engineers, architects, and facility personnel.

Why Work Here?

You join a team that offers fast-paced, varied work with extensive travel, giving you the chance to visit many different locations and facilities. You gain valuable exposure by working side by side with engineers, architects, and facility professionals, deepening your technical knowledge and broadening your career opportunities. The role provides continuous learning in structural inspection and industrial environments, making it an excellent fit for someone who enjoys hands-on work, professional growth, and diverse project experiences.

Work Environment

You work primarily in industrial settings across a wide variety of facilities, including automotive manufacturing plants, steel mills, aerospace sites, nuclear facilities, and other types of industrial operations. Most work occurs within a few hours of the primary site region, but frequent overnight travel to multiple surrounding states is required. You typically work in teams of two to three people, collaborating closely in the field. Conditions can range from clean, high-tech environments to dirty or heavy industrial areas, and you may be exposed to noise, dust, and other typical industrial conditions. Work often involves operating or riding in man lifts and working at significant heights, as well as using basic hand tools and digital devices for documentation. Appropriate personal protective equipment, including respirators where required, is used to ensure safety in these environments.
