Role accountabilities:

  • Perform hydrologic and hydraulic analyses to support stormwater management system designs, including drainage networks, culverts, channels, detention/retention systems, and floodplain evaluations
  • Prepare and review drainage reports, calculations, and construction documentation in accordance with project requirements and standards
  • Ensure compliance with state and local stormwater regulations, including coordination with the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) and the Kentucky Division of Water
  • Develop stormwater design solutions for transportation, municipal, and infrastructure projects across Kentucky, ensuring alignment with environmental and permitting requirements
  • Conduct watershed studies and floodplain analyses, including evaluation of potential impacts and mitigation strategies
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams (roadway, structural, environmental) to integrate drainage and stormwater systems into overall project design
  • Support permitting efforts, including preparation of regulatory documentation and coordination with relevant agencies
  • Assist during construction phases by reviewing shop drawings, responding to RFIs, and providing technical support

Qualifications & Experience:

Required Qualifications

  • 7+ years of hands-on experience in stormwater and roadway drainage design, including culverts, bridges, detention/retention systems, and hydraulic modeling
  • Proven project management experience, coordinating multidisciplinary teams, mentoring junior engineers, and contributing to all phases of design-build and infrastructure projects
  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering or a related field from an accredited program
  • Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certification; Professional Engineer (PE) license or eligibility is a plus
  • Strong understanding of state and local stormwater regulations, roadway design standards, and hydraulic analysis principles
  • Familiarity with industry-standard design and modeling tools (HEC-RAS, HY-8, StormCAD, MicroStation, AutoCAD Civil 3D, OpenRoads, GIS) with a willingness to learn and adapt

Key Attributes

  • Experience contributing to DOT or state transportation projects is a plus, providing exposure to large-scale, high-impact infrastructure initiatives
  • Solid understanding of FEMA floodplain regulations and ability to apply them in practical design solutions
  • Strong knowledge of stormwater design, including open channel conveyance, closed drainage systems, and post-construction water quality practices tailored to linear transportation projects
  • Hands-on experience with hydraulic and stormwater modeling software, including Bentley StormCAD, CulvertMaster, FlowMaster, ICPR, HEC-RAS (1D/2D), HEC-HMS, HY-8, SWMM, SMS, SRH-2D, with the ability to learn new tools quickly
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively across multidisciplinary teams
  • Demonstrates initiative, adaptability, and problem-solving skills, regularly taking on new projects and challenges with confidence
  • Possession of an NCEES record or willingness to establish one is a plus, supporting future PE licensure

Actual salaries will vary and are based on several factors, such as experience, education, budget, internal equity, project and location.
