HWI has a fantastic opportunity to join our Value Added Services team as a Steel Operations Specialist. Summary The Steel Operations Specialist is responsible for working with HWI’s steel customers to consult on operational processes and practices and provide support on trials and refractory installations as required.  Consulting will include but not be limited to BOF/EAF/AOD steelmaking process and involvement in metallurgy, slag chemistry, MgO optimization for improved refractory life, ladle slag chemistry, EAF power profiles, collect operational data as required, writing reports and recommendations, etc. 
Responsibilities
  • Work with customers to optimize furnace operations process and practices
  • Collecting operational data from customers
  • Writing reports and recommendations
  • Furnace slag chemistry analysis and recommendations
  • Trial and refractory installation support
  • Creating and presenting best practice SOP on EAF operations

Requirements
  • Metallurgical degree or 10 years equivalent experience in EAF, and/or AOD steelmaking 
  • operations required.  Refractory installation knowledge of EAF’s is preferred
  • Extensive knowledge of refractory applications in EAF, and/or AOD steelmaking process
  • with an excellent working knowledge of metallurgical slags and the effects of operational practices.
  • Minimum of 10 years EAF, or AOD operational melting and steelmaking experience.

  • Strong customer presentation skills 
  • Proficient in MS Office:  Excel, Work and PowerPoint
  • Minimum of high school diploma

Physical and Environmental Requirements
  • Physical Activity:  Requires between 1/3 and 2/3 of the time sitting, talking and hearing; and less than 1/3 of the time, standing, walking, using hands and fingers, reaching, climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching and crawling.
  • Lifting:  Requires lifting up to 50 pounds less than 1/3 of the time.
  • Vision:  Requires accurate close and distance vision.
  • Environment:  Requires 1/3 to 2/3 of the time in an office setting, working near moving mechanical parts, and exposed to fumes, airborne particles; and less than 1/3 of the time in high, precarious places, working near toxic or caustic chemical, extreme heat, risk of electrical shock, vibration and outdoor weather conditions.
