About the Company

Our vision is to transform how the world uses information to enrich life for all. Micron Technology is a world leader in innovating memory and storage solutions that accelerate the transformation of information into intelligence, inspiring the world to learn, communicate, and advance faster than ever.

About the Role

As a systems software engineer in Micron's Storage and Memory Systems (SMS) group within TPG Pathfinding, you will develop and demonstrate innovations that inspire and guide Micron’s future memory and storage products. You will be part of a small team of broadly skilled, highly motivated software engineers working cross-functionally with AI/ML experts, hardware engineers, and system architects to demonstrate viability and quantify the system-level value of future hardware technologies. This role requires your flexibility and willingness to fulfill system software engineering needs that vary significantly from task to task. This role will expand and bring to bear your ability to apply hardware-level system architecture knowledge to full-stack software development challenges. Your contributions will include software development, system-level problem solving, performance analysis, presentations, and research.

Responsibilities

  • Develop software and port applications that demonstrate and measure the value of proof-of-concept hardware systems and features
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with AI/ML experts, other software leaders, hardware engineers, and system architects to predict future AI system challenges, and identify memory- and storage-related opportunities to address those challenges
  • Define, set up, and implement analytical experiments
  • Build and modify Linux applications and libraries using C, C++, Python, Rust, SYCL, and/or CUDA for advanced heterogeneous systems
  • Develop and use emulators to predict system-level impacts of proposed capabilities before hardware system availability
  • Embrace emerging AI tools to accelerate productivity
  • Present innovations and insights to internal customers across Micron

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s (5+ yrs exp), Master’s or equivalent experience (3+ yrs), or PhD (0+ yrs) in CS, CE or related field
  • Experience with GPU programming (e.g., CUDA, SYCL, OpenCL, PyTorch) and GPU system memory hierarchies
  • Understanding of modern AI pipeline stages and features (e.g., transformers, neural networks, graphs, tokenization, prefill, decode)
  • Strong C, C++, Python, and shell scripting skills, plus Linux programming expertise (multithreading, IPC, ioctl, gdb, /proc, /sysfs)
  • Experience developing software to enable or demonstrate hardware system capabilities
  • Deep understanding of modern heterogeneous compute system features (e.g., NUMA domains, caching, GPUs, PCIe, CXL, NVLink, UALink)
  • Proven ability to debug system‑level issues spanning application, kernel, libraries, OS configuration, and hardware system boundaries.

Preferred Skills

  • Familiarity and/or experience with emerging AI software stacks
  • Familiarity and/or experience with DRAM and emerging memory technologies
  • Familiarity and/or experience with NAND and emerging storage/filesystem technologies
  • Familiarity with emulation platforms (e.g., qemu)
  • Experience with hardware-software integration and system bring-up
  • Willingness to work on rapidly changing, broad software tasks in a pathfinding environment
