Sr. Controls & Automation Engineer – 2nd Shift

Location: Montgomery, AL

Shift: 2:00 PM – 10:30 PM


Compensation: $85,000–$93,000 base + overtime

Overtime: Straight pay from 45–60 hours, 1.5x after 60 hours

Opportunity Overview

We are seeking a Senior Controls & Automation Engineer with a strong record of delivering successful automation projects in high‑speed manufacturing environments. In this role, you will lead hands‑on programming, integration, and optimization of advanced production systems using Allen‑Bradley PLCs, robotics, vision systems, and safety devices.

This is a highly technical, visible role where your expertise will directly impact line performance, uptime, quality, and safety.


What You’ll Do

You will serve as a senior technical authority supporting manufacturing operations and automation initiatives, including:

Controls Programming & Automation

  • Develop, modify, and troubleshoot PLC logic using Studio 5000 / RSLogix
  • Provide advanced PLC and HMI programming support for equipment upgrades and new installations
  • Maintain and improve automation systems through simulation, testing, commissioning, and startup

Robotics, Vision & Safety Systems

  • Lead integration and optimization of FANUC robots, Keyence vision systems, and safety scanners
  • Program and support safety devices including lasers, photo eyes, and light curtains
  • Modify and troubleshoot torque control systems (gun/box programming)

Engineering Design & Documentation

  • Create electrical panel designs, layouts, wiring schematics, and bills of materials
  • Read, red‑line, and update electrical drawings and documentation
  • Maintain automation documentation including functional specifications, SOPs, and recipe parameters

Manufacturing Support & Continuous Improvement

  • Provide controls support to manufacturing operations across all shifts
  • Initiate, test, and validate automation change controls and corrective actions
  • Identify potential automation issues and proactively develop solutions
  • Support Six Sigma and continuous improvement initiatives focused on efficiency and cycle time reduction

Project Leadership & Compliance

  • Manage automation projects from design through installation and validation
  • Coordinate with engineering, operations, maintenance, and external contractors
  • Participate in Factory Acceptance Tests (FATs) and commissioning activities
  • Ensure compliance with OSHA, NEC, and NFPA standards


What You’ll Bring (Required)

  • 5+ years of dedicated controls and automation engineering experience
  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering (Electrical Engineering preferred)
  • Advanced hands‑on experience with Allen‑Bradley PLCs and Studio 5000 / Logix 5000 environments
  • Proven experience with robotics (FANUC), vision systems (Keyence), and industrial safety hardware
  • Strong ability to troubleshoot automation failures and optimize machine performance
  • Experience supporting high‑speed or complex manufacturing lines
  • Solid understanding of electrical systems, controls architecture, and industrial networks


Preferred Experience

  • Experience with DCS programming
  • HMI/SCADA configuration and integration experience
  • Strong project management skills for multi‑discipline automation initiatives
  • Experience supervising contractors or skilled trades during equipment installations
  • Working knowledge of Visual Basic or advanced automation scripting
