Job Title: Construction Materials Technician / Special Inspector
Job Description

This role offers an opportunity to join a growing engineering firm in the North Carolina marketplace as a Construction Materials Technician / Special Inspector, supporting geotechnical and construction services projects. Working primarily in the Triad area, you will perform field and laboratory testing of construction materials, support quality control on active construction sites, and contribute to the reputation and growth of the local office. This position is ideal for someone who enjoys hands-on work, being outdoors, and building a long-term career in civil and geotechnical construction services.

Responsibilities

  • Travel to active construction sites in the Triad market to perform field inspections and testing of construction materials.
  • Collect samples of soils, concrete, aggregates, asphalt, and other materials from job sites following established procedures.
  • Perform field testing of materials on site when appropriate, based on sample size, quantity, and project requirements.
  • Transport collected samples to the office laboratory for additional testing and analysis when field testing is not sufficient.
  • Conduct laboratory testing of concrete, soil, aggregates, and asphalt in accordance with applicable standards and specifications.
  • Perform soil inspections to verify compaction, moisture content, and other geotechnical parameters as required by project specifications.
  • Perform concrete inspections, including monitoring placement, sampling, and testing to confirm strength and quality.
  • Assist with masonry inspections to verify materials and installation methods meet project and code requirements.
  • Assist with asphalt inspections and testing to confirm mix properties, compaction, and surface quality.
  • Document all field and laboratory activities accurately, including test results, observations, and site conditions.
  • Prepare clear and concise written reports summarizing test procedures, results, and any nonconforming conditions.
  • Communicate effectively with project team members, site personnel, and office staff regarding test results, scheduling, and site needs.
  • Follow safety procedures on all job sites and while driving between locations, maintaining a safe and professional work presence.
  • Work independently in the field once trained, managing daily schedules, site visits, and documentation with minimal supervision.
  • Support the growth and reputation of the local office by delivering reliable, high-quality testing and inspection services.
Essential Skills
  • Ability to perform field and laboratory testing of concrete, soil, aggregates, and asphalt.
  • Experience or strong aptitude for hands-on labor or field roles such as landscaping, farming, construction labor, or field service work.
  • High attention to detail when collecting samples, performing tests, and recording data.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills to interact with project teams and prepare clear reports.
  • Ability to read and write reports and document technical information accurately.
  • Ability to work independently in the field after initial training and onboarding.
  • Willingness to submit to an MVR check to qualify for driving a company vehicle.
  • Reliable driving skills and comfort traveling frequently between job sites and the shop.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
  • ACI certification preferred for concrete testing and inspection.
  • ICC certifications are a plus for special inspections and code-related work.
  • Experience with soil inspections, concrete inspections, masonry inspections, and asphalt inspections is highly beneficial.
  • Familiarity with concrete testing and soil testing procedures and standards.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to build positive relationships with coworkers, site personnel, and clients.
  • Interest in building a long-term career in civil engineering, geotechnical engineering, or construction services.
Work Environment

This position is primarily field-based, with a large majority of time spent outdoors on active construction sites and driving between locations. During the first few months, you will ride with a team member to job sites for training and mentoring; once you are up to speed, you will receive a company truck to drive independently to assigned sites. Job sites are typically construction projects in the early stages of the building process, where you will work around heavy equipment, construction crews, and changing site conditions. You will also spend time at the office laboratory to perform material testing and complete documentation. The role requires comfort working in various weather conditions, navigating uneven terrain, and adhering to appropriate safety practices and site-specific requirements. Attire should be practical and suitable for construction and laboratory environments, including the use of required personal protective equipment as needed.

Job Type & Location

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Raleigh, NC.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $20.00 - $25.00/hr.
