Solid Waste Attendant

This classification is responsible for evaluating the acceptability of incoming waste, assessing fees and maintaining records at solid waste and transfer stations to insure appropriate disposal of waste and fair assessment of fees to public and to perform maintenance and basic repairs at solid waste work sites. Incumbents in this classification may be scheduled at the transfer station sites as needed for appropriate staffing.
  • Evaluate, measure, weigh and determine charge for waste for public and commercial contractor, to use the transfer stations scales
  • Record, balance and maintain accurate records of fees collected
  • Provide information and assistance to public regarding solid waste services available
  • Maintain and work in the Household Hazardous Waste Area
  • Maintain solid waste transfer station in a clean state, safe for operations, including litter and debris.
  • Monitors recycle areas for proper disposal of recyclable items
  • Report any problems to the Program Manager

This classification requires the incumbent to be able to work independently and often alone; physically and mentally perform the essential functions; understand and communicate the laws, rules and regulations regarding disposition of solid waste, recyclable and hazardous waste; accurately collect receipt and record fees; provide information and materials to the public either in person or on the phone; perform basic repair functions on buildings and equipment. The nature of the work is recurring with occasional variations from the norm; the incumbent is expected to use good judgment within established guidelines and procedures. Backup systems for error avoidance and detection include rechecking of cash collections prior to depositing and more senior Solid Waste Attendants available for unusual or new situations or questions.
Knowledge of:
  • laws and regulations regarding solid, recyclable and hazardous waste disposal and operations of disposal and transfer sites;
  • appropriate methods for handling and receipting money;
  • acceptable methods for handling solid, recyclable and hazardous wastes.
Ability to:
  • perform the physical and mental duties accurately and timely;
  • handle the disposition of solid, recyclable and hazardous wastes;
  • make accurate mathematical calculations and maintain accurate records;
  • communicate effectively with the public and other employees;
  • work within established guidelines with limited supervision;
  • establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees in the department.

  • A High School Diploma or GED
  • A sufficient education to read and comprehend the laws and regulations required of the position
  • Sufficient math skills to accurately calculate solid waste fees
  • Previous work experience would include dealing with the public on a regular basis in situations requiring the incumbent to determine and enforce regulations and laws

LICENSES, CERTIFICATES, AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
  • Valid WA State Driver License and clean driving record
  • HAZWOPER (Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response) 24-hour class at minimum or ability to obtain within 6 months of employment
