Job Description

The Laborer / Shop Helper supports daily production in a heavy-duty machining job shop by assisting machinists and operators, handling materials, and maintaining a clean, safe, and organized work environment. This role involves working with a variety of metals, operating basic shop equipment under supervision, and supporting shipping and receiving activities to help ensure efficient workflow and high-quality output.

Responsibilities

  • Assist machinists and machine operators with daily production tasks in a busy machining facility.
  • Load and unload raw materials, parts, and finished products safely and efficiently.
  • Operate basic shop equipment such as presses, saws, pallet jacks, and forklifts under supervision.
  • Use hand tools and power tools for grinding, polishing, and general fabrication support as directed.
  • Perform general shop duties including cleaning, organizing, and maintaining work areas.
  • Inspect materials and finished products for defects to ensure quality standards are met.
  • Support shipping and receiving activities, including packing, labeling, and staging orders.
  • Follow all company safety procedures and maintain a clean, hazard-free workspace at all times.
  • Work with carbon steel, stainless steel, aluminum, and other materials as required by production needs.
  • Read and follow basic instructions, and support machinists with simple tasks related to CNC and manual machining operations.
  • Handle materials and components of varying sizes, including very large and heavy-duty parts, using appropriate equipment and techniques.

Essential Skills

  • Experience using hand tools and power tools in a shop, manufacturing, or warehouse environment.
  • Ability to safely operate or learn to operate forklifts, pallet jacks, and basic shop equipment under supervision.
  • Basic mechanical aptitude and a strong willingness to learn machine operation and shop processes.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and stand for extended periods during the shift.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to maintaining quality standards.
  • Ability to follow safety procedures and maintain a clean, organized, and hazard-free work area.
  • High school diploma or GED preferred.
  • Prior experience in manufacturing, machining, or warehouse work is a plus.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Lockport, IL.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $20.00 - $20.00/hr.
