Job Description

The Shipyard Laborer supports maintenance and repair activities aboard U.S. Navy vessels by performing fire watch, general labor, and trades assistance. This role involves monitoring hot work such as grinding, welding, and cutting metal, setting up and cleaning work areas, moving materials and tools, and assisting marine trades personnel with repair and maintenance tasks. The position requires regular heavy lifting of 40–50 pounds and the flexibility to shift between fire watch, labor, and trades support duties based on daily needs.

Responsibilities

  • Perform vigilant fire watch duties during grinding, welding, cutting, and other hot work to help maintain a safe work environment.
  • Set up work areas by staging tools, equipment, and materials needed for ship repair and maintenance activities.
  • Clean up work areas after tasks are complete, including removing debris, organizing tools, and maintaining general housekeeping standards.
  • Move, carry, and position materials, tools, and equipment throughout the shipyard and aboard vessels, including regular lifting of 40–50 pounds.
  • Assist marine trades personnel with maintenance and repair tasks aboard U.S. Navy vessels as directed.
  • Support ship repair operations by acting as a trades helper for marine repair and construction-related activities.
  • Follow all safety procedures and use required personal protective equipment (PPE) while working in a heavy industrial shipyard environment.
  • Climb ladders and access various areas of the ship, including confined spaces, to support work activities.
  • Wear and properly use a respirator and other protective gear when required by the task or work area.
  • Adapt to daily work needs, which may focus primarily on fire watch, general labor, or trades assistance depending on project demands.

Essential Skills

  • Proven experience using hand tools safely and effectively.
  • Proven experience using power tools in an industrial, construction, or similar environment.
  • Ability to perform regular heavy lifting of 40–50 pounds throughout the shift.
  • Willingness and physical ability to perform consistent general labor in a heavy industrial setting.
  • Comfort working in a ship repair or construction-type environment with changing tasks and priorities.
  • Ability to follow safety instructions and maintain awareness while performing fire watch duties.
  • Capability to climb ladders, work in confined spaces, and wear a respirator as required.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience in ship repair, marine repair, or marine trades support is highly beneficial.
  • Comfort working around welding, grinding, cutting, and other metal fabrication activities.
  • Ability to work extended hours, including overtime, as project needs require.
  • Strong work ethic and reliability in a demanding, physically intensive role.

Work Environment

This role is based in a heavy industrial shipyard environment aboard metal ships and around active repair operations. You work primarily on-site in all weather conditions, both indoors and outdoors, and regularly move through tight spaces, ladders, and varying levels of the vessel. Personal protective equipment (PPE) is required at all times, and you must be prepared to wear a respirator and other safety gear as needed. The standard shift runs from 6:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Saturday, with frequent opportunities for extended 12-hour shifts and occasional Sunday work to meet project demands.

This is a Contract position based out of Seattle, WA.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $22.00 - $22.00/hr.
