Senior VMWare Horizon/vSphere Engineer

We are seeking a hands-on Senior VMware Horizon (Omnissa) and vSphere Engineer. This person will be tasked with operating, maintaining, and enhancing VDI and core VMware compute infrastructure.

This is an initial 9-month contract with the potential to extend, eligible for full benefits. Hybrid role requiring 3-days onsite every week in Sacramento, CA. Local candidates only.

Key Responsibilities

• Administer and operate VMware Horizon (Omnissa): connection servers, UAG, Horizon Agent, pool/image lifecycle, session troubleshooting.
• Design, implement, maintain and upgrade VMware vSphere (ESXi, vCenter, clusters, DRS, HA, vMotion).
• Lead Horizon-related tasks: image/template management, instant/linked clones, FSLogix/profile integration, performance tuning.
• Migrate, validate and manage VDI backups and DR procedures; perform recovery tests.
• Implement platform hardening, access controls, logging/monitoring, and patching.
• Automate routine ops with PowerCLI/PowerShell or scripting; use APIs where applicable.
• Monitor capacity and performance; recommend and implement optimizations.
• Create and maintain runbooks, configuration docs, and knowledge-transfer materials.
• Collaborate with storage, networking, desktop, application and security teams; participate in scheduled maintenance windows and occasional off-hours support.
• Provide regular status updates and technical recommendations to stakeholders.

Required Qualifications

• 5-8+ years administering VMware vSphere (ESXi, vCenter) in enterprise environments.
• 3+ years hands on with VMware Horizon (Omnissa preferred): pool management, connection servers, UAG, Horizon Agent.
• Strong knowledge of vSphere features: clusters, DRS, HA, vMotion, Host Profiles, storage policies.
• Experience with Horizon image lifecycle, instant/linked clones, and profile management (FSLogix or equivalent).
• Scripting/automation skills: PowerCLI/PowerShell required.
• Proven troubleshooting of VDI session/connectivity and platform performance issues.
• Familiar with backup/restore and DR for virtual environments.
• Networking fundamentals for VDI (load balancing, NAT, DNS, firewall rules).
• Strong documentation and communication skills; ability to work onsite with cross-functional teams.

Preferred Qualifications

• Direct Omnissa (VMware Horizon distribution) experience.
• VMware certifications (VCP-DCV, VCAP, Horizon certs).
• Experience with identity integrations (AD/LDAP), load balancers, SSL/TLS cert management.
• Familiarity with government/state IT processes and compliance.

• Knowledge transfer and handover at contract completion.
