Performs intermediate technical work managing wastewater operations, maintaining operation of treatment equipment and disposal of wastewater, and related work as apparent or assigned. Work is performed under the limited supervision of the Senior Utilities Plant Supervisor. Continuous oversight is exercised over Utilities Plant Operator.
- Operates and controls wastewater treatment processes in accordance with strategies developed by the Plant Supervisor, including the operation of ancillary facilities and equipment.
- Monitors and evaluates supervisory control and data acquisition process control systems information, monitors data and error reports, evaluates operational and maintenance issues, and makes functional adjustments to treatment components within scope of authority and training.
- Assists technicians and mechanics to troubleshoot equipment failures and operational problems; monitors performance and ensures stability and compliance with state and federal environmental and safety regulations and city policies, procedures, and standards.
- Participates in the operation and maintenance of pumps and auxiliary equipment to control the flow of wastewater, air, and sludge through the various stages of the treatment process.
- Submits work orders for repairs on equipment, materials, and supplies; unloads and stores hazardous chemicals.
- Analyzes and evaluates instrument readings and reports of laboratory analyses to maintain or improve plant operations; recommends process modifications to improve plant performance.
- Operates a motor vehicle to transport personnel, samples, equipment, and materials.
- Records operational data, telemetry readings, work logs, and other prescribed work documentation.
- Ensures crew collects samples and conducts process control tests to monitor system performance and makes adjustments to the wastewater treatment plant processes in response to daily flow demands.
Education and Experience: High school diploma or GED and considerable experience in a wastewater operations plant, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Thorough knowledge of related industry, organization, and department policies, practices, and procedures; thorough knowledge of related industry, organization, and departmental legal guides, recommendations, best practices, ordinances, and laws; thorough knowledge of industry standard and department specific equipment including standard office equipment; thorough knowledge of standard office and department specific software; ability to make arithmetic computations using whole numbers, fractions, and decimals; ability to compute rates, ratios, and percentages; ability to read and understand blueprints; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates and the general public.
Physical Requirements: This work requires the regular exertion of up to 10 pounds of force and occasional exertion of up to 50 pounds of force; work regularly requires standing, walking, speaking or hearing, lifting and repetitive motions, frequently requires

important instructions to others accurately, loudly or quickly; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels and to receive detailed information through oral communications and/or to make fine distinctions in sound; work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data, visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, using of measuring devices, operating machines, operating motor vehicles or equipment and observing general surroundings and activities; work regularly requires exposure to wet humid conditions (non-weather), working near moving mechanical parts, exposure to fumes or airborne particles, exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals, exposure to outdoor weather conditions and exposure to bloodborne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment; work is generally in a loud noise location (e.g. grounds maintenance, heavy traffic).
Special Requirements - Within 1 year of hire:
- Water Pollution Grade III Certification
- OSHA Safety training
- Upon hire: Valid driver's license.
