Senior Trades Structural Inspector

Supervise and participate in the work of employees engaged in assuring compliance of building system installations with applicable adopted codes, ordinances, and state or federal regulations. Supervise a multi-disciplined inspection work team while serving as Key Specialist for the building inspection functional area.

  • Supervise the work of subordinate field inspection personnel. Provide effective oversight and mentoring of personnel to ensure quality customer service and service delivery. Evaluate work loads, formulate daily work plans and assign team and individual tasks as required. Coordinate work schedules with other Chief Inspectors. Conduct periodic evaluations of field inspection personnel and establish performance plans;
  • Function as a Key Specialist within the particular inspection functional area. Mentor, train, supervise and provide technical oversight to all inspectors when working in the inspection functional area. Periodically evaluate inspectors across all work teams with respect to building inspection matters only. Provide interpretation and resolve problems on all building technical and procedural matters subject to department policy and review of the Assistant Building Official. Coordinate with other Chief Inspectors/Key Specialists and Assistant Building Official to recruit and select field inspection personnel, research and develop recommendations for local adoption of technical codes and standards, research and develop recommendations for annual operating budget;
  • Perform field inspections of construction in-progress to verify compliance with approved construction plans and building codes. Read and interpret construction plans, specifications, shop drawings and applicable regulations governing building systems. Coordinate activities with supervisors, plan examiners and other members of the inspection team. Communicate effectively with contractors, subcontractors, owners, building designers and other stakeholders. Maintain required licenses and professional certifications in area of responsibility. Maintain knowledge of regulations, industry changes, trends and new technologies in area of responsibility;
  • Prepare correction notices and other field correspondence to notify permit holder of areas of non-compliance. Maintain records of inspection results and comments. Advise supervisors of technical or administrative issues that have a significant impact on policies, policy interpretations, or legal issues;
  • Examine pre-permit construction plans for compliance with regulations governing building systems. Read and interpret construction plans, specifications, shop drawings and applicable regulations governing building systems. Document areas of non-compliance within final plan review report;
  • Educate citizens and contractors regarding technical and procedural requirements of local codes and state regulations governing building systems. Communicate effectively with citizens and contractors regarding departmental processes, procedures and importance of compliance with adopted codes and standards;
  • Assist other City departments and government agencies by verifying compliance of new construction and alterations with applicable zoning, subdivision and flood hazard mitigation ordinances and regulations as well as asbestos abatement, stormwater management and other environmental rules. Assist other departments in evaluation of sub-standard housing and dangerous buildings. Assess post-disaster building damage in accordance with FEMA protocols;
  • Enforce or compel compliance with applicable laws governing installation of building systems. Document in detail areas of violations or significant non-compliance for evidentiary purposes. Coordinate enforcement actions with Legal department. Issue citations or file criminal complaints as necessary. File complaints with appropriate state and federal agencies as necessary. Testify in court or at administrative hearings.
Completion of bachelor degree in engineering, architecture or construction management, and/or licensed architect or engineer, or requisite trade license and comparable skills resulting from work experience which will substitute for required education at a 2 to 1 ratio subject to approval of the City Building Official with an additional two to four years of experience in inspecting building systems for compliance with applicable standards and codes. Must achieve certification from a major code group within twelve months of hire; or any combination of relevant education and experience which provides the following:

Physical Requirements:
1. occasionally lift and carry up to 25 pounds.
2. frequently stand and walk during a shift.
3. occasionally climb ladders, scaffolding, stairs, poles, and other inclined surfaces in order to make inspections.
4. rotate upper trunk to the right or left while sitting or standing.
5. coordinate eye, hand, and foot movement in order to operate a vehicle.
