position summary

We are seeking an experienced and highly motivated Senior Tax Compliance Accountant to join our team. This role is responsible for managing multi-state tax compliance related to payroll, sales and use tax, and regulatory filings. This role ensures that our organization remains compliant with federal, state, and local tax regulations across multiple jurisdictions. The successful candidate will manage payroll tax reporting, state registrations, tax portal maintenance, and sales/use tax filings while supporting operations and partnering with Human Resources, third-party payroll providers, and internal payroll specialists.

This position will have the flexibility to work from Merjent's Minneapolis, Minnesota office or remotely from a home office in the Twin Cities or surrounding area. The anticipated annual salary for this position is between $92,700 and $106,700 annually, depending upon the qualifications and experience of the successful candidate. This position is also bonus eligible.

responsibilities

  • Prepare and file multi-state sales and use tax returns; monitor nexus and registration requirements.
  • Ensure compliance with federal and multi-state payroll tax filings (e.g., 941, 940, withholding, unemployment, PMFL).
  • Reconcile sales and payroll tax accounts and ensure timely, accurate remittance.
  • Manage tax notices, audits, and correspondence with state agencies.
  • Oversee state tax accounts and portals, including registrations and account maintenance.
  • Partner with payroll providers (e.g., ADP) to review filings and ensure accurate setup and reporting.
  • Develop and improve tax compliance processes, documentation, and internal controls; support payroll and project accounting as needed.

qualifications and experience

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field; CPA preferred.
  • 5+ years of accounting or project accounting experience, ideally in a consulting environment.
  • Strong knowledge of general ledger, financial reporting, and core accounting principles.
  • Experience managing multi-state payroll and/or sales and use tax compliance (high-volume, multi-jurisdiction).
  • Familiarity with complex state and local tax filings, including home rule jurisdictions.
  • Experience with accounting and payroll systems (e.g., Deltek Vantagepoint, ADP).
  • Advanced Excel skills and proficiency in Microsoft Office and Adobe Acrobat.
  • Strong attention to detail, organization, and ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines.
  • Effective communicator and collaborative team player with the ability to work independently and drive process improvements.
