Our client, a well-established and highly respected architecture firm with more than 40 years of success, is seeking a Structural Engineer to become the firm's first in-house structural engineering professional. Position Overview
The Structural Engineer will lead structural design and engineering efforts for a diverse portfolio of projects, with a primary focus on custom residential and single-family homes, while also supporting multifamily, mixed-use, retail, restaurant, and commercial projects.
This individual will play a key role in establishing internal engineering standards, improving project delivery, and helping shape the future growth of the firm's engineering capabilities. The position offers a clear pathway into leadership for candidates interested in mentoring staff and building a team over time.
Responsibilities
- Perform structural engineering and design for residential and commercial building projects.
- Prepare structural calculations, design documents, and construction-related deliverables.
- Coordinate closely with architects, interior designers, consultants, contractors, and project stakeholders.
- Participate in permitting and entitlement processes, particularly within Montgomery County and the Washington, DC region.
- Review project documents for technical accuracy and constructability.
- Support the development of internal structural engineering standards and workflows.
- Serve as a technical resource to project teams throughout design and construction.
- Mentor future engineering staff as the department expands.
- Contribute to the long-term growth and strategic direction of the firm's in-house engineering practice.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering, or related discipline.
- Approximately 8–10 years of structural engineering experience.
- Strong experience designing single-family residential structures.
- Thorough understanding of structural systems, building materials, and construction practices.
- Experience navigating permitting and code requirements within Montgomery County and/or Washington, DC.
- Strong technical judgment and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent communication and collaboration abilities.
- Dependable, team-oriented, and client-focused mindset.
Preferred
- Professional Engineer (PE) license.
- Experience with multifamily, mixed-use, retail, restaurant, or other commercial building types.
- Previous mentoring or team leadership experience.
- Interest in helping build and lead an engineering team.
- Business development or client relationship experience.
