Under direction to serve as a lead worker over a small crew performing various street maintenance, repair, and construction work; to operate a variety of construction, maintenance, and transportation equipment in a variety of maintenance activities; and to work in other areas such as concrete, asphalt, street sign, and storm drain maintenance, weed abatement, and grading.
Distinguishing Characteristics
Sr. Streets Maintenance Worker I:This is the entry level in the class series.Positions at this level usually perform most of the duties required of the positions at the II level, but are not expected to function at the same skill level and usually exercise less independent discretion and judgement in matters related to work procedures and methods.Work is usually supervised while in progress and fits an established structure or pattern.Exceptions or changes in procedures are explained in detail as they arise.Since this class is often used as a training class, employees may have only limited or no directly related work experience.
Sr. Streets Maintenance Worker II:This is the full journey level in the class series.Positions at this level are distinguished from the I level by the performance of the full range of duties as assigned, working independently and exercising judgment and initiative.Positions at this level receive only occasional instruction or assistance as new or unusual situations arise, and are fully aware of the operating procedures and policies of the work unit. Positions in this class series are flexibly staffed and positions at the II level are normally filled by advancement from the I level requiring five years of experience at the I level, successful performance, budget availability, and management recommendation.When filled from the outside, the employee is required to have prior related experience which allows the employee to meet the qualification standards for the II level.
- Leads a field crew in a variety of street maintenance activities;
- Drives and operates light to moderate-sized construction equipment, including pick-ups, dump trucks, motor graders, skip loaders, vactor trucks, street sweepers, water trucks, rollers, backhoes, front loaders, and various construction equipment;
- Assists crews in concrete, asphalt, and traffic sign maintenance as needed;
- Inspects ditches, drainage areas, and roadside shoulders for removal of weeds and application of herbicides;
- Performs regular storm drain maintenance and emergency storm work;
- Reviews job assignment requirements;
- Ensures blueprints or plans are in compliance with local ordinances and laws;
- Provides and coordinates equipment and supplies;
- Provides technical guidance to less experienced team members;
- Identifies maintenance and repair needs and recommends corrective action;
- May assist in other sections of the Department as necessary; and
- Performs related duties and responsibilities as assigned.
Education:- Equivalent to a high school diploma.
Experience:
Sr. Streets Maintenance Worker I:- Four years of increasingly responsible experience performing street maintenance work.
Sr. Streets Maintenance Worker II:- Six years of increasingly responsible experience performing street maintenance work.
Licenses and Certificates:- Possess and maintain a valid California commercial driver's license with tanker endorsement.
Special Requirements:Essential functions and duties require the following physical abilities and work environment:- Ability to sit, stand, walk, kneel, crouch, stoop, squat, crawl, twist, climb, and lift 50 lbs.;
- Exposure to heat, noise, outdoors, vibration, confining work space, chemicals, explosive materials, mechanical hazards, electrical hazards, toxic substances, foul odors, wastewater, sludge, effluents, bacteria, viruses, and traffic hazards;
- Ability to travel to different sites and locations.
