We are hiring a Senior Software Developer (full-time) to join UTHealth Houston School of Public Health in Houston, Tx. In this role, you will collaborate with the project manager, developers, and database administrators to design, develop, and maintain applications. They also work directly with users to gather requirements, provide support, coordinate with the Data Center Operations team on system migrations, and support other related technical initiatives. Strong software engineering skills, particularly experience with designing, developing, and maintaining applications or systems, and data analysis expertise, with a strong emphasis on advanced SQL skills for querying, analyzing, and manipulating complex datasets is preferred.

Position Summary:

The Senior Software Developer is a lead developer position for highly experienced developers who demonstrate exceptional technical and leadership skills. Leads projects, mentors junior and intermediate developers, and performs Full-Stack application development and system integration using various programming languages and tools, such as SQL, C#, Java, PHP, JavaScript, jQuery, AngularJS, HTML, CSS, APIs, PowerApps, and Power BI. The selected candidate collaborates closely with team members and other business and IT entities at UTHealth Houston. This role requires excellent customer service and communication skills, along with the ability to effectively manage multiple projects and priorities in a dynamic environment.

Position Key Accountabilities:

  • Solution Design: Architects end-to-end solutions for complex business problems, considering factors such as scalability, performance, security, and maintainability.
  • Coding and Development: Leads by example by writing clean, efficient, and well-documented code, and actively participates in development tasks as needed.
  • Team Mentorship: Provides mentorship and technical guidance to junior and intermediate developers, fostering a culture of continuous learning and growth within the team.
  • Project Management: Manages the full software development lifecycle, from requirements gathering and planning to deployment and maintenance, ensuring projects are delivered on time and according to policy.
  • Problem Solving: Analyzes and troubleshoots technical issues, and proposes solutions to address them effectively.
  • Testing and Collaboration: Works closely with cross-functional teams and participates in testing and debugging to deliver high-quality software solutions.
  • Documentation: Writes and maintains documentation for code, processes, and project-related information to facilitate collaboration and knowledge sharing within the team.
  • Compliance: Establishes, implements, and enforces security protocols and ensures compliance with ADA accessibility standards.
  • IT Support: Provides IT support for off-the-shelf or vendor-developed systems used for faculty research purposes, including systems operating in Linux or containerized environments.
  • Task and time management: Manages multiple projects and assignments concurrently while consistently meeting established deadlines.
  • Learning agility: Learns and develops new knowledge and skill sets to successfully complete projects and adapt to evolving requirements.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Certification/Skills:

  • Software engineering skills, particularly experience with designing, developing, and maintaining applications or systems, preferred.

  • Data analysis expertise, with a strong emphasis on advanced SQL skills for querying, analyzing, and manipulating complex datasets, preferred.

Minimum Education:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or a related field required May substitute required education with equivalent years of experience beyond the minimum experience requirement.

Minimum Experience:

  • 5 years of relevant experience required

Physical Requirements:

Exerts up to 20 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 10 pounds frequently and/or a negligible amount constantly to move objects.

Security Sensitive:

This position is a security-sensitive position pursuant to Texas Education Code §51.215 and Texas Government Code §411.094. To the extent that a position requires the holder to research, work on, or have access to critical infrastructure as defined in Texas Business and Commerce Code §117.001(2), the ability to maintain the security or integrity of the infrastructure is a minimum qualification to be hired for and to continue to be employed in that position.
