Senior Piping Designer

Position Overview

We are seeking an experienced Senior Piping Designer to support large-scale midstream oil & gas projects focused on pipeline facilities, compression, measurement, automation, and related infrastructure. This role will lead piping design execution on complex projects while driving quality, constructability, standards compliance, and cross-functional coordination throughout the project lifecycle.


The ideal candidate brings extensive experience in oil & gas facility design, advanced 3D modeling expertise, strong leadership capabilities, and the ability to mentor designers while partnering closely with engineering and project leadership teams.


Key Responsibilities


Project & Design Leadership

  • Lead piping design execution for large, complex projects or multiple project areas simultaneously.
  • Define and implement project-wide piping design strategies, modeling approaches, naming conventions, work practices, and deliverable requirements.
  • Develop layouts and designs utilizing company standards, plot plans, flow diagrams, line lists, supplier data, and design specifications.
  • Support engineering design, project execution, and technical documentation efforts across multiple disciplines.
  • Generate and review plot plans, P&IDs, PFDs, orthographic drawings, isometrics, and 3D model deliverables.
  • Drive constructability reviews, modularization planning, layout risk mitigation, and tie-in execution strategies.
  • Coordinate and participate in P&ID walkthroughs, design reviews, site inspections, and progress meetings.


Quality & Standards

  • Own piping deliverable quality through implementation of checking plans and consistent standards application.
  • Conduct quality control reviews of drawings, drawing packages, and material lists.
  • Minimize rework by ensuring compliance with company and industry standards.
  • Develop and maintain piping design administrative and technical practices, procedures, and specifications.
  • Build and maintain CAD standards, piping specification libraries, and drawing database integrity.
  • Develop as-built drawings from field redlines and verify field conditions.


CAD & Technical Expertise

  • Create and manage 3D models and drawing packages using CADWorx 3D Plant, AutoCAD, and related software tools.
  • Utilize NavisWorks and document management systems such as Autodesk Vault Professional.
  • Develop BOMs/material lists and coordinate model/drawing integration across disciplines.
  • Determine and enforce best practices for xrefs, attachments, layering conventions, and CAD workflows.
  • Support continuous improvement initiatives including automation tools, libraries, templates, and checklists.


Coordination & Communication

  • Interface with project management, engineering leadership, clients, suppliers, subcontractors, and internal stakeholders.
  • Support scope definition, schedule forecasting, resource planning, and change management discussions.
  • Present design decisions clearly, including tradeoffs, alternatives, and recommendations.
  • Coordinate design activities across civil, structural, mechanical/process piping, electrical, and instrumentation disciplines.


Mentorship & Team Support

  • Provide advanced technical guidance, mentorship, and CAD support to piping designers and drafters.
  • Support team development and readiness for future design leadership responsibilities.
  • Assist with workstation planning, CAD resource forecasting, and utilization monitoring.


Minimum Qualifications


Education

  • High School Diploma or equivalent required.


Experience

  • Minimum 12 years of direct piping design experience.
  • Minimum 8 years of oil & gas facility design experience.
  • Strong experience supporting midstream facilities including compression, measurement, automation, and pipeline infrastructure.
  • Proven experience leading piping design efforts on complex capital projects.


Technical Skills

  • Advanced proficiency with CADWorx 3D and AutoCAD.
  • Proficiency with NavisWorks.
  • Working knowledge of Autodesk Vault Professional or similar document management systems.
  • Strong understanding of piping specifications, material nomenclature, and industry drafting standards.
  • Knowledge of applicable industry codes and standards including ASME, B31.3, B31.4, and B31.8.
  • Familiarity with raster editing software and engineering document control processes.
  • Intermediate proficiency with Microsoft Office applications including Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Outlook.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience supporting owner/operator midstream organizations.
  • Experience developing CAD standards, piping libraries, and automation workflows.
  • Prior experience mentoring or leading piping design teams.
  • Strong understanding of constructability, maintainability, and lifecycle-focused design practices.


Safety & Compliance

Candidates must comply with all OSHA regulations, site safety requirements, and company safety protocols. Familiarity with oil & gas industry safety practices and procedures is required.
