Senior Parks/Facilities Maintenance Worker (10698, 10723, Grade HL3)

We are actively seeking two experienced, dynamic, highly motivated team players to join us as a Senior Parks/Facilities Maintenance Worker with the Cabin John Maintenance Facility, located in Potomac, MD. The Southern Parks Division meets both local and regional leisure needs by providing opportunities for a wide variety of outdoor recreational activities in the most densely populated areas of Montgomery County. The division manages over 200 parks, including Urban, Local, and Regional Parks. Included in these parks are almost 200 employees and 100 pieces of equipment to accomplish the Department’s mission. Under the direction of a Parks/Facilities Maintenance Leader, this role performs skilled Senior Parks/Facilities maintenance work involving considerable responsibility, complexity, and variety. The successful candidate will support various park maintenance programs and perform a variety of general park maintenance tasks such as equipment operation, routine ground maintenance, playground repairs, trash removal, local athletic field renovation and maintenance, trail maintenance, tree planting, pruning, and aftercare by working with other team members. The ideal candidate should possess skills to operate non-CDL trucks, tractors with attachments, riding mowers, loaders, and forklifts and apply chemical pesticides. The position requires working days, nights, and weekends. Performs the full range of general and some skilled park and maintenance work in maintaining buildings, sites, trails and parks. Requires operating light automotive and motorized power equipment; using or operating a range of hand tools (e.g., hand saws, hammers, screwdrivers, clippers), power tools (e.g., drills, circular saws, power sanders), motorized or power equipment (e.g., riding mower or small tractor with attachments, power tiller) and occasionally larger power equipment for loading, unloading, and moving materials (e.g., small front-end loader or bobcat, small tree spade); operating light trucks with small trailers, cargo vans, and sedans and performing basic maintenance and cleaning of equipment.

• Operate non-CDL riding mowers and tractors with attachments to mow parks, ballfields, and brush.
• Operate non-CDL trucks, truck and trailer combinations, trash trucks, front-end loaders, and trucks with snowplows and heavy equipment removing snow, grading fields, and other park areas.
• Haul materials and equipment.
• Perform routine safety inspection and maintenance of vehicles and equipment.
• Occasionally perform routine custodial maintenance and repairs to park buildings and structures.
• Maintain athletic fields including layout of fields (measure, plot, and square corners, plot yard lines, and mark lines) and aerate, overseed, and fertilize turf areas.
• Install amenities such as signs, grills, picnic tables, fence (chain link and split rail), basketball rims, and nets.
• Perform tree maintenance duties. Operates chainsaws. Operate chipping machine to grind brush into mulch.
• Assist with stump grinder to remove tree stumps.
• Perform routine playground maintenance and high-frequency safety inspections on area playgrounds. Working as a team and under direction, apply playground wood mulch and make repairs to playground structures.
• Assist with transporting supplies and setting up special events.
• Provide general assistance to park visitors and assist with programs and events.
• Ability to communicate in another language a plus.
• Performs stormwater facilities preventive maintenance according to the Department of Environmental Protection standards.
• Maintain bioretention and rain garden facilities with balanced vegetation free of weeds.

Working Conditions:

• Primarily works outside but may work inside on occasion or as assigned.
• May work weekends, evenings, and holidays.
• Occasionally exposed to inclement weather, dirt, waste, odors, caustic chemicals, pesticides, wildlife, and potentially harmful insects (e.g., bees, hornets, wasps) and plants (e.g., poison ivy).
• Ability to occasionally lift up to 100 pounds and regularly up to 50 pounds.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Proven ability to read and understand materials and instructions and write routine records and reports.
• Ability to withstand exposure to various elements and weather conditions, waste, caustic chemicals, pesticides, wildlife, and potentially harmful insects (e.g.: bees, hornets, wasps, etc.).
• The ability to constantly kneel, bend, twist, lift, and carry heavy objects of up to 100 pounds.
• The ability to worknights, weekends, days, and /or any combination thereof.
• An essential employee on-call 24 hours to support with any emergencies
• *Alternative Work Schedule:Tuesday-Saturday (6:00 am-2:45 pm) or Sunday-Thursday (6:00 am-2:45 pm)

1. Pass Commission medical examination.
2. 18 years of age.
3. Two (2) years of experience in groundskeeping, building maintenance or park maintenance, semi-skilled trade work (HVACR, plumbing, painting, masonry, electrical, carpentry).
4. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted, which together total two (2) years.
5. Valid driver's license in accordance with both State and Commission rules and regulations. Driver's license must be unencumbered by restrictions, revocations, suspensions, or points that could limit the employee's ability to drive Commission vehicles or perform driving duties required of their position.
