Senior Land Surveyor

Seattle Public Utilities (SPU) is seeking an experienced land surveying professional to oversee and/or perform the most complex and difficult technical surveys, including cadastral, rights-of-way, control, monitoring, and topographic surveys. Senior Land Surveyors are responsible for the management of crews involved in all aspects of land surveying, including field data collection and reconnaissance. In addition, they prepare legal descriptions and exhibit maps for recording and are responsible for creating project estimates and schedules. Senior Land Surveyors draft topographic and right-of-way maps used to design municipal infrastructure for Capital Improvement Projects, integrating technological equipment with complex software, and serving as a technical expert for the Land Survey Section. This Senior Land Surveyor position reports to the Land Survey Manager within the Project Delivery Branch.

The Senior Land Surveyor performs professional land surveying work to protect City and private property, easements, and rights-of-way while promoting the public welfare of Seattle citizens. Specific responsibilities include:

• Field Operations & Supervision: Supervise and/or perform precise field surveys for cadastral retracement, route layout, control traverses, concrete structures deformation verification, 3D terrestrial laser scanning, topographic surveys, profile/cross-section surveys, and project as-built surveys.
• Drafting & Calculations: Supervise and/or perform complex computer-aided drafting of drawings and maps (base maps, quarter section maps, contour maps, and as-built sketches). Perform right-of-way and alignment calculations, as well as area and boundary calculations.
• Analysis & Research: Research and analyze property line locations based on regulations and survey records. Interpret field notes and existing records to ensure maps and drawings represent present facts. Prepare legal descriptions and exhibit maps for recording.
• Project Management: Establish the scope, budget, and schedule of survey work with clients. Create detailed project estimates and keep clients informed of progress, complications, or impacts to the project timeline.
• Technical Advisory: Provide strategic input regarding land surveying to assist the City in making efficient decisions regarding property improvements. Identify and implement process improvements to enhance the quality of surveying services.
• Advanced Technology: Perform technical processing of 3D terrestrial laser scanning point clouds and complex survey calculations. Assist in developing standard operating procedures for scanning data and train personnel in 3D laser scanning techniques.

• Education: Associate Degree in Civil Engineering Technology OR two (2) years of college-level coursework in engineering and construction technology.
• Experience: Four (4) years of land surveying experience.
• Education/Experience Equivalency: A combination of education and/or training and/or experience which provides an equivalent background required to perform the work of the class will be evaluated on an individual basis.
• License Requirements: Current Washington State driver’s license (or evidence of equivalent mobility) required at time of hire.
• Preferred: Registration as a Professional Land Surveyor (PLS) by the State of Washington.

This position allows for the flexibility of a hybrid work schedule. Employees will be required to come into the office a minimum of twice a week. Individual schedules will be agreed upon by the employee and their supervisor and may be subject to change based on business needs.

The full salary range for this position is: $62.79 - $70.35 per hour
