The ideal candidate in this position will lead and perform advanced technical tasks related to the design, installation, maintenance, and repair of automated irrigation systems across City parks, golf courses, and other City properties. This role involves coordinating daily operations, diagnosing and troubleshooting complex system issues, maintaining reclaimed water systems, and ensuring regulatory compliance. The position supports system planning, oversees contractor activities, and operates specialized equipment to ensure efficient and reliable irrigation performance. The person in this position serves as a subject matter expert and performs complex irrigation system work while providing leadership, training, and technical guidance to staff.

  • Leads and participates in the installation, maintenance, and repair of irrigation systems, including pipes, valves, heads, controllers, pumps, and backflow prevention devices.
  • Coordinates daily work activities; assigns tasks, monitors progress, and ensures quality and safety standards are met
  • Diagnoses and resolves complex system issues involving pressure, electrical components, controllers, and water distribution.
  • Programs and maintains computerized irrigation systems and weather-based controls to optimize water use.
  • Oversees reclaimed water system operations; ensures compliance with environmental and safety regulations.
  • Schedules and coordinates testing, repair, and replacement of backflow and pressure control devices.
  • Reads and interprets plans, specifications, and system maps; supports design, layout, and installation of new or upgraded systems.
  • Inspects contractor work and coordinates projects to ensure compliance with specifications and standards.
  • Responds to Underground Service Alert requests and performs utility locates.
  • Operates and maintains vehicles, heavy equipment, and specialized tools.
  • Orders materials and maintains system records, maps, and documentation.
  • Trains staff on irrigation systems, equipment, and safe work practices; serves as a technical resource.
  • Responds to public inquiries and resolves issues related to irrigation operations.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.


The following minimum qualifications are required to be met at the time of application.


Education:
High school diploma or equivalent, supplemented by specialized training in irrigation, maintenance, plumbing or electrical functions.


*Specialized training may include on-the-job training obtained through relevant work experience.


Experience:
Three years of increasingly responsible experience in irrigation system installation, maintenance, and repair, including experience with automated and reclaimed water systems for irrigation purposes at a level comparable to an Irrigation System Technician with the City of Reno.

Licenses and Certifications:
  • Valid Driver’s License.
  • Possession of, or ability to obtain, an appropriate, valid backflow testing certification and Cross-Connection Specialist certification issued by the AWWA within one year of hire.

Examination Process:
Applicants must meet the minimum qualifications and pass the examination for this position to be eligible for hire. The examination will consist of online assessments, which include a Cognitive Abilities Test along with a Training and Experience evaluation (T&E) weighted as follows:


Training & Experience Evaluation (T&E) = 70%

Cognitive Abilities Test = 30%

Training and Experience Evaluation (T&E) Details:
The T&E examination consists of a Supplemental Questionnaire. The questions may be viewed online under the tab marked "QUESTIONS"on the job announcement page. The T&E must be submitted online at the time of application.

  • Failure to complete all of the questions or incomplete responses will result in a lower score; therefore, it is advantageous for you to provide a full and complete response to each supplemental question.

Employee/Veteran Preference in the Event of Tie Scores:

Promotional Examinations (Rule VIII, Section 7):
If two or more employees earn the same final score (including seniority points), veterans’ preference will be applied if any of the tied employees have submitted proof of an honorable military discharge. This preference is only used to break ties. If a tie still remains, it will be broken based on seniority in the current classification. Proof of honorable discharge must be submitted with the application.


Seniority Points:

Seniority Credit (Rule VIII, Section 9):
Classified employees of the City of Reno shall receive seniority credit computed by adding to a passing score as follows:

The final ranking will include the applicable seniority points added to the overall grade of the examination process. For each full year of continuous service completed, 0.2 points will be added up to a maximum of ten (10) years... 2 points will be the maximum.


Appointment and Certification:
Appointments to positions in the City's Civil Service system are made on the basis of examination. Scores resulting from a competitive examination are used in determining a person's rank on an eligible register. The department may hire any of the persons referred. The names of those persons not hired may be considered when the next vacancy occurs, for as long as that register is viable.


Probationary Period:
Certification of Eligibles, Appointments, and Probation (Rule VII, Section 12)

Classified employees who are newly hired, promoted, reclassified, transferred, or who voluntarily demote to a lower position are subject to a probation period.


The only exception is if an employee chooses to voluntarily demote back to the exact job they previously held within 24 months of being promoted.
