Senior Human Resources Business Partner - Hospitals & Clinics (Mediation Specialist)



Position Summary


Serve as a trusted HR Business Partner to hospital and clinic leadership, delivering strategic HR guidance and hands‑on operational support with a specialty in workplace mediation and conflict resolution. You will partner with clinical and administrative leaders to drive workforce strategies, employee relations, performance management, and regulatory compliance while acting as the primary mediator for complex, sensitive disputes across patient‑facing settings.



Key Responsibilities

  • Partner with hospital and clinic leaders to align HR strategy with operational goals
  • Provide daily consultative HR support on employee relations, performance management, counseling, discipline, terminations, and return‑to‑work matters.
  • Serve as the organization’s mediation expert with all matters pertaining in a clinic setting.
  • Partner with internal & external legal counsel on both arbitration and litigation matters.
  • Design, facilitate, and lead mediated discussions for interpersonal conflicts, team disputes, and supervisor‑employee issues to achieve durable resolutions.
  • Conduct impartial investigations into workplace complaints (harassment, discrimination, policy violations), prepare factual reports, and recommend corrective actions.
  • Coach leaders and managers on effective conflict management, progressive discipline, documentation best practices, and constructive feedback techniques.
  • Design and deliver training on mediation, de‑escalation, difficult conversations, civility, and manager fundamentals tailored to clinical environments.
  • Ensure HR practices comply with federal, state, and local employment laws and healthcare regulations (e.g., FMLA, ADA, OSHA, HIPAA as it relates to HR processes).
  • Lead or participate in employment union activities.


Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Industrial/Organizational Psychology, Business Administration, or related field.
  • 5+ years of progressive HR experience, with at least 2–3 years supporting hospitals, clinics, or other healthcare settings.
  • Prior clinical background or experience working closely with physicians, nurses, or clinic operations.
  • Strong employee relations and investigation experience; familiarity with healthcare workforce issues (nursing, allied health, physicians).
  • Working knowledge of California employment law and healthcare‑specific regulatory requirements.
  • Excellent interpersonal, facilitation, and influencing skills; proven ability to build credibility with clinical leaders and frontline staff.
  • High emotional intelligence, confidentiality, neutrality, and sound judgment in sensitive situations.
  • Proficient in HRIS systems, Microsoft Office; comfort with analytics and HR dashboards.


Preferred Qualifications


  • Certification in mediation or conflict resolution (e.g., CDR, CFM, or equivalent).
  • PHR, SPHR, SHRM‑CP or SHRM‑SCP certification.
  • Experience with unionized environments or collective bargaining support.
