Job Title: Senior Field TechnicianJob DescriptionThe Senior Field Technician performs advanced mechanical and electrical work on power transmission, distribution, and generation equipment at customer facilities. This role leads complex testing, troubleshooting, maintenance, and commissioning activities in substations and power plants, ensuring safe, reliable, and high-quality operation of electrical power equipment. The position offers the opportunity to grow into a leadership role, guiding service offerings, mentoring team members, and building strong relationships with clients across a wide range of industries.
Responsibilities
- Execute mechanical and electrical tasks on equipment used in power transmission, distribution, and generation at customer facilities.
- Read and interpret equipment manuals, schematics, and diagrams to troubleshoot and resolve complex equipment problems.
- Troubleshoot, repair, replace, and clean components in substations, including transformers, circuit breakers, cables, and associated equipment.
- Lead and perform transformer testing, including power factor, turns ratio (TTR), insulation resistance, sweep frequency response analysis (SFRA), winding resistance, partial discharge, and leakage reactance testing.
- Lead and perform cable testing, including insulation resistance, tan delta, hipot, time-domain reflectometry (TDR), partial discharge testing, and operation of cable thumpers.
- Lead and perform circuit breaker testing, including insulation resistance, contact resistance, power factor, breaker timing, SF6 gas analysis, current transformer (CT) testing, high current testing, secondary injection testing, and vacuum bottle integrity testing.
- Test both electro-mechanical and solid-state protective relays to ensure proper protection and control functionality.
- Participate in the installation, maintenance, and repair of electrical power equipment in substations, power plants, and industrial facilities.
- Plan, conduct, and contribute to safety meetings and training sessions, reinforcing a strong safety culture and adherence to industry standards.
- Support management in planning, scheduling, executing, and managing the costs of field projects.
- Diagnose complex mechanical and electrical problems and provide effective, timely solutions for customers.
- Document test results, maintenance activities, and findings using company software tools and Microsoft Office applications.
- Communicate clearly with customers, project managers, and internal teams regarding project status, findings, and recommendations.
- Rotate through emergency on-call duty and respond to customer emergencies in a timely manner.
- Travel to project sites throughout the Midwest and East regions, working independently in the field while maintaining high standards of safety and quality.
- Perform other duties logically associated with the role as needed to support projects and customer requirements.
Essential Skills- 7–10+ years of hands-on experience performing high, medium, and low voltage testing of electrical power equipment.
- Extensive experience with voltage testing and diagnostics on electrical power systems.
- Demonstrated transformer and circuit breaker testing experience in substations or similar environments.
- Ability to diagnose complex mechanical and electrical problems on power equipment.
- Ability to achieve NETA Level III or IV certification within 6 months of employment.
- Familiarity with industry standards and regulations, including NETA standards, NFPA 70E, OSHA compliance standards, safety laws, and DOT regulations.
- Strong communication skills for interacting with customers, peers, and management in the field and in meetings.
- Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to make sound decisions in the field.
- Proficiency with PCs, including email, internet use, data entry, and Microsoft Office applications.
- Ability to multitask, prioritize work, and perform effectively under pressure to meet goals and deadlines.
- Ability to work independently in the field while exercising excellent judgment.
- Experience supporting project management activities, including planning, scheduling, execution, and cost management of field projects.
Additional Skills & Qualifications- NETA certification (Level I, II, or III) is highly valued.
- Neta certificate, an Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Electrical/Electronic Technology, or equivalent military experience in electrical/electronic fields (one of these is required).
- Experience with NETA-based testing practices in substations and industrial power systems.
- Knowledge of Doble DTAF and PowerDB software is preferred; training will be provided for the right candidate.
- Experience working with substation maintenance and testing, including power factor, insulation resistance, and advanced diagnostic methods.
- Exposure to SF6 gas circuit breakers, voltage regulators, and other high-voltage apparatus is beneficial.
- Experience in maintenance testing, acceptance testing, and commissioning of electrical power systems.
- Background in industries such as mining, industrial electrical, data centers, primary metals, utilities, health care, or military and government facilities is a plus.
- Strong interest in mentoring others and potentially growing into a leadership role overseeing service offerings and building teams.
- Comfort working in rapidly growing organizations and adapting to expanding service offerings and project scopes.
Work EnvironmentThis is a field-based role serving customers primarily throughout the Midwest and East regions, with the ability to reside anywhere in these areas near major service hubs such as Kentucky, Michigan, Minnesota, Alabama, Ohio, Maryland, and future expansion regions. Work is performed at customer sites including power plants, substations, industrial facilities, data centers, and other large-scale electrical infrastructure locations. Corporate business hours are Monday through Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., but project requirements often demand work outside standard hours, including overtime, nights, weekends, and some holidays. The position requires regular overnight, multi-day travel and solo travel to project sites. Per diem is provided at federal rates to cover lodging and meals while traveling. A company credit card is provided for approved business expenses. Technicians may choose between a company truck with a fuel card or using a personal vehicle with a stipend and fuel coverage, subject to company policy. The environment involves working around high-voltage equipment, outdoors and indoors, in substations and power plants, often in varying weather conditions and industrial settings. Pay and BenefitsThe pay range for this position is $40.00 - $70.00/hr.
