The Precision Control Actuation System organization staffs mechanical engineers for a variety of roles supporting primarily control section Integrated Product Teams. You will be expected to flex responsibilities based on the current needs of the organization and their respective skill sets.
What You Will Do
At this grade level, you will be expected to work autonomously with limited oversight, have advanced understanding of the Systems Engineering domain, manage small projects that enhance PCAS organization around assigned program work, and provide guidance to other professionals.
Support may include but is not limited to detailed systems design, test design and execution, systems engineering, proposals and estimates, or earned value management.
In this position, the candidate will be responsible for developing technical solutions for a wide range of high performance actuation system and motion control challenges, such as aerodynamic steering, thrust vectoring, attitude and divert maneuvering, pointing, and stabilizing of missile systems & subsystems.
Responsibility will cover a portion of the life cycle of the product, from conceptualizing and design, to prototyping and manufacturing, integration and verification testing, through production support.
You will be expected to apply sound systems engineering principles to define and solve sometimes complex system problems while influencing engineering teams to include electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, control systems engineering, software and firmware engineering, manufacturing engineering, supply chain and others.
The position will address requirements development for actuation systems, sub-units, modules and software/firmware; improve systems tools and processes for actuation systems; aid development of Modular Open System Architecture (MOSA) standards; leverage Model Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) practices for actuation systems; enhance standardized actuation system architectures with modularity, scalability and adaptability; improve standardized verification methods and approaches for Design Verification Testing, Qualification Testing and Acceptance Test; create re-usable and scalable design and development documents to maximize cross-program efficiency. The candidate working with the multi-disciplinary actuation team will implement these systems engineering practices on program applications and influence continuous improvement methodologies to increase efficiency and eliminate systemic issues.
Day-to-day activities are highly collaborative, both internally across Raytheon as well as externally with suppliers, partners and customers.
What You Will Learn
The PCAS organization provides a strong technical learning environment with a dedicated technology pyramid comprised of engineering fellows.PCAS engineers are provided the opportunity for direct access to these subject matter experts, fostering accelerated technical growth.
Hands-on opportunity is plentiful, as great emphasis is put on exposing designers to the hardware through participation in prototype building and verification testing, thus enabling firsthand knowledge of system performance.
Qualifications You Must Have
Typically requires a degree in Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM) and a minimum of 5 years of prior relevant experience, or An Advanced Degree in a related field and minimum 3 years experience
Experience with electromagnetic or electrohydraulic control actuation systems
Qualifications We Prefer
Five (5) years of experience with systems, electrical or mechanical engineering of actuation systems or motion controls
Advanced degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Systems Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Physics or Computer Science
Experience developing technical solutions to a wide range ofcomplexproblems across multiple parts of the product lifecycle such as proposal, design, manufacture, integration and test
Ability to estimate project / tasks level of effort and to deconstruct higher level tasks into discrete lower-level work packages and tasks
Ability to articulate, in both oral and written form, to technical, non-technical and management audiences
Experience developing requirements and decomposing or deriving applicable technical requirements from higher level specifications
Experience with development of actuation system requirements, system architecture, requirements risk, requirements verification and validation, system performance & function, safety and environmental compliance
Experience working with a wide variety of industry / military standards and specifications for system, DC motor, and mechanism design (AGMA, IEEE, INCOSE, SAE, etc.)
Experience with feedback control systems, including control theory, system sizing, testing and integration, design to manufacturing, kinematic and dynamic simulation and analysis
Experience of developing system based models including Matlab/Simulink and SysML
Experience of Hardware In The Loop development and tools such as dSpace
Experience in design and development of test equipment for electromechanical systems that operate under high load and rate
Experience on Failure Investigation Teams with FRACAS / FRB / FR / A / CA
Experience in working with control actuation systems that employ permanent magnet brush and brushless DC motor technology and with different actuation drive systems including trapezoidal drive, sine drive and field oriented control
Experience of actuation communication busses; electromechanical actuators (using gears, ballscrews, leadscrews etc); position sensors; electronic controllers and power amplifiers
Basic understanding of packaging electromechanical systems for management of grounding, shielding and electrical noise in compact designs
