The Senior Accountant is responsible for maintaining the system’s operating and accounting records, including general ledger activity, financial statements, reconciliations, deposits, investment-related accounting, and required governmental filings.

The ideal candidate is a detail-oriented accounting professional who takes ownership of their work, understands the importance of accuracy in public retirement system finance, and enjoys working in a professional, mission-driven environment.

Candidates must meet one of the following qualification paths:

Option 1:
Bachelor’s degree in business, Finance, Accounting, or a related field, including at least 24 semester hours in accounting, plus five or more years of professional experience in accounting or financial auditing.

Option 2:
Certified Public Accountant certificate plus one year of professional experience in accounting or financial auditing. A CPA certificate may substitute for the bachelor’s degree and 24 semester hours in accounting.


Preferred Experience

Preference may be given to candidates with experience in one or more of the following areas:

  • Public sector, governmental, pension, retirement system, or nonprofit accounting.
  • Investment accounting.
  • Momentive MIP (formerly Abila) accounting software or similar governmental accounting systems.
  • Strong internal control practices and accounting process improvement.

Ideal Candidate

The successful candidate will bring strong technical accounting skills, sound judgment, and a high level of professionalism. This position requires someone who can manage detailed work independently while also communicating effectively with colleagues, auditors, banks, custodians, and other stakeholders.

The ideal candidate will have:

  • Strong knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles and financial statement preparation.
  • Experience with general ledger accounting, journal entries, account reconciliation, and month-end close.
  • Experience preparing bank reconciliations and researching discrepancies.
  • Familiarity with accounting for investment securities.
  • Strong Excel skills.
  • Ability to learn and work effectively in the system’s general ledger accounting software.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Professional communication skills and a team-oriented work style.
  • A commitment to accuracy, accountability, confidentiality, and public service.

Primary duties include:

  • Prepare and record asset, liability, revenue, and expense entries by compiling and analyzing account information.
  • Prepare, balance, and maintain general ledger entries and produce monthly financial statements.
  • Reconcile multiple checking accounts with custodial and operating bank records.
  • Research annual revenue sharing distributions and ad valorem reports, and prepare and record related schedules.
  • Prepare and reconcile monthly deposit schedules.
  • Maintain the system’s accounting software, currently Momentive MIP.
  • Prepare dollar-weighted investment returns on a monthly basis.
  • Prepare and file required federal and state withholding tax forms.
  • Support the annual audit and assist auditors with interim projects and information requests.
  • Review daily financial activity, classify transactions appropriately, and post entries accurately.
  • Reconcile account balances, research discrepancies, and ensure the integrity of financial data.
  • Maintain complete, organized, and audit-ready accounting records and supporting documentation.
  • Assist with month-end close activities, including journal entries, bank reconciliations, and financial reporting.
  • Help build, refine, and document accounting processes that support accurate financial tracking, reliable reporting, and strong internal controls.

Compensation and Benefits

Salary range is $85,000 to $114,980, depending on qualifications and experience. The system offers a competitive public-sector benefits package, including paid leave; group life, health, dental, and vision insurance through the Louisiana Office of Group Benefits; participation in a stable, fully funded defined benefit pension plan; and optional flexible spending account(s), and an optional 457(b) plan.
