Security Systems Installer

DRH Security
Loveland, CO

ROLE OVERVIEW

The Security Systems Technician is a hands-on field role responsible for the installation, programming, troubleshooting, and maintenance of commercial and residential security systems. This includes IP camera systems, access control, intrusion/alarm panels, structured cabling, and network configuration.

This is not a plug-and-play position. You are expected to understand the systems you work on — at the component level, at the software level, and at the network level. When something doesn’t work, you figure out why. You read documentation, test configurations, and develop real solutions. Calling tech support is a last resort, not a first instinct.

HOW WE WORK

Highside runs flat. No middle managers, no unnecessary layers. Everyone is in the field, everyone contributes, and everyone is accountable to the same standard of work.

We have senior people on this team who have built the processes and standards that drive our operations. We also know that fresh perspectives make us better. What matters here is the willingness to learn how we do things, the curiosity to understand why, and the drive to make the team stronger by being part of it.

Titles don’t run this company — the work does. Everyone here earns their credibility the same way: by showing up, solving problems, and getting better every day.

CORE RESPONSIBILITIES

Installation & Programming

  • Install, configure, and commission IP camera systems, NVRs/DVRs, and video management platforms
  • Program and configure access control systems including door controllers, readers, credentials, and schedules
  • Install and program intrusion/alarm panels, sensors, contacts, and communication modules
  • Run, terminate, and certify structured cabling (Cat5e/Cat6, coax, fiber as needed)
  • Configure network switches, PoE, VLANs, and port forwarding for system connectivity
  • Program intercom and communication systems

Troubleshooting & Service

  • Diagnose and resolve system failures across all installed platforms — cameras, access control, alarms, networking
  • Read and interpret wiring diagrams, system schematics, and manufacturer documentation
  • Use diagnostic tools (multimeter, cable tester, laptop, manufacturer software) to isolate issues
  • Perform firmware updates, software patches, and system optimizations
  • Respond to service calls within scheduled windows and resolve issues on the first visit whenever possible
  • Document all service work including time, materials, root cause, and resolution in the field management system

Independent Problem Solving

  • Research unfamiliar systems and equipment using manufacturer resources, technical manuals, and online documentation before escalating
  • Develop and maintain working knowledge of all platforms deployed across the customer base
  • Build and maintain a personal reference library of system configurations, default settings, and common fixes
  • Learn new platforms and technologies as the company expands its service offerings — this is ongoing, not optional

Field Operations

  • Maintain a clean, organized, and fully stocked service vehicle
  • Communicate job status, delays, parts needs, and scope changes to management in real time
  • Provide professional, courteous customer interaction on every site visit
  • Log time in/out, materials, and job notes in the field management system for every call
  • Represent Highside Security with professionalism in appearance, communication, and workmanship

WHAT THIS ROLE DEMANDS

  • Self-sufficiency. You will often be the only technician on site. You need to be able to work through problems without someone holding your hand.
  • Humility. Everyone on this team is still learning — that’s what makes it work. Bring what you know, stay open to what you don’t.
  • Curiosity. Security technology changes constantly. If you’re not actively learning, you’re falling behind.
  • Ownership. If you install it, you own it. If it breaks, you own the fix. No finger-pointing, no shortcuts.
  • Honesty. If you don’t know something, say so — then go learn it. Guessing costs the company money and the customer confidence.
  • Grit. Attics in July. Crawl spaces in January. Long days. Difficult systems. This job is not easy, and we’re not pretending it is.

REQUIREMENTS

  • Minimum 3 years of experience in low-voltage security systems installation and service
  • Working knowledge of IP networking fundamentals (subnetting, DHCP, DNS, port forwarding, VLANs)
  • Experience with at least two of the following: IP camera/VMS platforms, access control systems, intrusion/alarm panels
  • Ability to read and interpret wiring diagrams and technical documentation
  • Proficiency with hand tools, power tools, and diagnostic equipment
  • Valid driver’s license and clean driving record
  • Comfortable working on ladders, in attics, crawl spaces, and outdoors in all weather conditions
  • Smartphone capable for field management app use
  • Ability to pass a background check

NICE TO HAVE

  • Low-voltage license or willingness to obtain
  • Manufacturer certifications (Axis, Genetec, Honeywell, DMP, Lenel, HID, etc.)
  • Experience with structured cabling certification and testing
  • Previous experience in a lead or senior technician role
